LTO-9

LTO-9 is the ninth and current generation of the Linear Tape-Open (LTO) magnetic tape format, the global industry standard for the long-term, high-capacity archiving of digital film and media assets.


Why Tape Persists in the Digital Age

In an era of cloud storage and solid-state drives, it may seem archaic that the multi-billion dollar film industry entrusts its most valuable assets to magnetic tape. However, for long-term, secure ‘cold storage,’ LTO tape offers a combination of capacity, durability, and cost-effectiveness that remains unmatched. A finished feature film, along with all its source material—original camera footage, VFX elements, sound mixes, and mastering files—can amount to hundreds of terabytes or even petabytes of data. Storing this volume of data on spinning hard drives for decades is both prohibitively expensive and unreliable, as hard drives are prone to mechanical failure.

LTO tape provides an ideal solution. It is designed for high-capacity, low-access storage, making it perfect for creating a permanent, physical archive of a film’s digital DNA.

LTO-9: The Current Standard

LTO-9 is the latest generation in the LTO Ultrium roadmap, an open standard developed and continuously improved by HP, IBM, and Quantum. Its key specifications make it the default choice for modern media archiving:

  • Massive Capacity: A single LTO-9 tape cartridge can hold 18 TB of uncompressed data, and up to 45 TB of compressed data. This means an entire feature film’s raw 8K footage can often fit on just a handful of tapes.
  • Archival Lifespan: LTO tapes are certified to have a shelf life of 30 years or more when stored in proper environmental conditions, far exceeding the reliable lifespan of a hard disk drive.
  • Low Cost of Ownership: The cost per terabyte of LTO tape is significantly lower than that of enterprise-grade hard drives. For the massive data volumes involved in filmmaking, this cost difference is a critical factor.
  • Security: Tapes create an ‘air gap.’ Once the data is written and the tape is removed from the drive, it is offline and immune to cyber threats like ransomware, which is a major concern for digital archives.

Post-production facilities and film archives use LTO-9 to create multiple backup copies of a film’s assets. Typically, at least two sets of tapes are made: one is kept on-site, and the other is sent to a secure, climate-controlled, off-site vault for disaster recovery. This ensures the long-term preservation of cinematic heritage in the digital era.
