An Intimacy Coordinator is a specialized role that has become an industry standard in the post-#MeToo era, fundamentally changing how scenes of intimacy are handled on set. They are a trained professional who acts as a liaison between the director and the actors, and as an advocate for the performers. Their job is to ensure that scenes involving nudity, simulated sex, and other forms of physical intimacy are approached with a structured, professional, and consent-based process, transforming a potentially vulnerable and awkward situation into a safe and repeatable piece of choreography.

Core Responsibilities

Much like a stunt coordinator designs a fight scene, an intimacy coordinator designs and oversees scenes of intimacy. Their work is a blend of artistic collaboration and rigorous safety protocol.

1. Communication and Consent: Before the scene is shot, the coordinator meets privately with each actor to discuss their boundaries, comfort levels, and any ‘no-go’ areas. They then communicate these boundaries to the director and production, ensuring that consent is clearly established and respected by all parties.
2. Choreography: They work with the director to translate their vision into a set of specific, choreographed movements. Instead of a vague instruction like ‘now you make love,’ the direction becomes a technical sequence: ‘On this line, you will place your hand on their shoulder, then you will kiss for a count of three, then you will move your hand to their lower back.’ This de-personalizes the action, allowing the actors to treat it as a piece of physical storytelling rather than a spontaneous, personal interaction.
3. On-Set Advocacy: During filming, the intimacy coordinator is present on set to ensure the choreography is being followed and that the actors’ boundaries are being maintained. They advocate for a ‘closed set’ (with minimal crew present) and ensure that modesty garments and barriers are used correctly. If an actor feels uncomfortable or an agreement is breached, the coordinator has the authority to pause the action and address the issue.

The introduction of intimacy coordinators has had a profound impact on the industry. It has replaced a historically problematic system where actors, particularly younger and less powerful ones, were often left to navigate intimate scenes on their own, leading to instances of coercion, discomfort, and abuse.
