Global Illumination

Global Illumination (GI) is a set of algorithms in 3D computer graphics used to create realistic lighting by simulating how light bounces off surfaces.


Simulating the Behavior of Light

Global Illumination (GI) is a catch-all term for advanced lighting techniques in 3D rendering that aim to create photorealistic imagery. It goes beyond simple ‘direct illumination,’ which only calculates the light that travels in a straight line from a light source to a surface. GI adds the crucial element of indirect illumination—the complex and subtle ways that light interacts with an entire environment.

The Two Pillars of GI

Global Illumination simulates two main phenomena:

  1. Indirect Bounces (Diffuse Inter-reflection): This is how light bounces off surfaces and illuminates other objects. For example, in a room with a red wall, sunlight coming through the window will hit the red wall, and some of that red light will bounce off and cast a subtle red tint onto a nearby white sofa. This effect, often called ‘color bleeding,’ is a hallmark of realistic lighting.
  2. Caustics: This refers to the patterns of light that are focused or scattered after passing through a transparent or reflective object. The shimmering patterns of light at the bottom of a swimming pool, or the bright spot of light focused by a magnifying glass, are examples of caustics.

Techniques like ray tracing and path tracing are used to calculate these complex light interactions. While computationally very expensive, Global Illumination is what gives modern CGI its incredible realism, allowing digital creations to sit seamlessly within live-action footage and making fully animated worlds feel tangible and believable.
