Too much exposition breeds “infodump fatigue”; too little spawns plot holes. Show-running rooms therefore craft “exposition ladders,” staggering reveals so each answers a question while posing a fresh mystery. Genre influences density: high-concept science fiction must explain mechanics (dream layers in Inception), whereas slice-of-life dramas rely on relational cues. Editing refines dosage—compressing redundant beats, aligning reveals with emotional peaks, and leveraging reaction shots to make exposition feel interactive. Test screenings flag confusion, prompting reshoots or voiceovers that patch gaps. Yet retrospective criticism shows that ambiguity can age well; 2001: A Space Odyssey never clarifies its monolith’s agenda, inviting endless discourse.
