This character is the rightful heir to a throne or a position of leadership who, for their own safety or due to a political coup, was removed from their kingdom as a child. Their story is one of discovery, growth, and the ultimate reclamation of their destiny.

The Inevitable Path of the Prince

The narrative of the Exiled Prince follows a well-established and deeply resonant structure:

1. Life in Obscurity: The prince grows up in a humble or hidden environment, often unaware of their true lineage. They are ‘a diamond in the rough,’ possessing innate noble qualities that are waiting to be revealed.
2. The Call to Adventure: A mentor figure or a dramatic event reveals the prince’s true identity and the suffering of their people under the rule of a usurper.
3. The Road of Trials: The prince must embark on a journey, gathering allies, learning the skills of a warrior and a leader, and overcoming a series of tests that forge them into the hero their kingdom needs.

Iconic Cinematic Examples

• Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The definitive Exiled Prince. He is the hidden heir to the throne of Gondor, living in the wilds as a ranger named Strider. His journey throughout the trilogy is one of slowly accepting his lineage and destiny, growing from a reluctant wanderer into the king he was born to be.
• Simba in The Lion King (1994): After his father Mufasa is murdered by the usurper Scar, Prince Simba flees into exile. He grows up in obscurity under the philosophy of ‘Hakuna Matata’ before being called back to his duty to challenge Scar and reclaim his place as the rightful king of the Pride Lands.
• Moses in The Prince of Egypt (1998): A unique variation. He is a Hebrew child raised as a prince of Egypt. Upon discovering his true identity, he is cast into exile, where he receives his call to adventure to return and free his people from bondage.
