The Rise of Green Production
The film and television industry has a notoriously large environmental footprint, consuming vast amounts of energy, generating significant waste, and requiring extensive travel. In response, a movement towards ‘green production’ has gained momentum, leading to the creation of new, specialized roles. The Eco Supervisor (also known as a Sustainability Manager or Eco Consultant) is at the forefront of this effort, acting as the designated point person for all on-set environmental initiatives.
Their primary goal is to work with every department to find practical and effective ways to minimize the production’s impact, from pre-production planning through to the final wrap.
Eco Supervisor: Key Responsibilities
The role of an Eco Supervisor is comprehensive and collaborative, touching nearly every aspect of the production:
- Sustainability Planning: Developing a tailored environmental action plan for the production, setting clear goals for waste diversion, energy conservation, and responsible sourcing.
- Waste Management: Implementing and managing a robust on-set waste-sorting system with clear bins for recycling, composting, and landfill. The goal is to divert as much waste as possible from landfills.
- Resource Conservation: Tracking and reporting on the consumption of fuel, water, and electricity. They advocate for and help implement solutions like using renewable energy, battery-powered generators, and LED lighting.
- Sustainable Sourcing: Working with departments like construction, art, and catering to prioritize the use of sustainable, local, and responsibly sourced materials and vendors.
- Crew Education and Engagement: Distributing a ‘Green Memo’ to all cast and crew, conducting short informational meetings, and posting clear signage to ensure everyone understands and participates in the sustainability protocols.
- Data Tracking and Reporting: Meticulously tracking data related to the production’s carbon footprint. At the end of the shoot, they prepare a wrap report that quantifies the environmental savings and achievements, which can be used for certifications like the EMA Green Seal.
