Tying Up the Threads

The term denouement comes from a French word meaning “to untie.” In narrative structure, it refers to the very final section of a story, which takes place after the climax and resolution. While the resolution deals with the end of the central conflict, the denouement’s primary function is to wrap up any remaining subplots, answer lingering questions, and show the audience what the characters’ lives look like in their new status quo.

It is the ‘aftermath’ sequence that provides thematic closure and a final emotional impact. The denouement shows how the events of the story have changed the protagonist and their world. It is the final scene that lets the audience say goodbye to the characters and leaves them with a lasting final impression.

Denouement vs. Resolution

Though often used interchangeably, there is a useful distinction:

• Resolution: The solving of the main problem. (The Death Star is destroyed.)
• Denouement: The new reality that exists because the problem is solved. (The heroes are celebrated, and the Rebellion has a new hope.)

A film can have a resolution without a lengthy denouement, sometimes ending abruptly after the climax for a more shocking effect. However, most mainstream films include a denouement to provide a more satisfying sense of closure.

Classic Examples

• In Star Wars: A New Hope, the denouement is the grand medal ceremony. The main conflict ended when the Death Star exploded (the resolution), but this final scene shows Luke and Han being celebrated as heroes, cementing their new roles within the Rebellion and establishing the new state of affairs.
• In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, the denouement is the epilogue scene set 19 years later at King’s Cross Station. The resolution was Voldemort’s defeat, but the denouement shows a future of peace where Harry, Ron, and Hermione are now parents sending their own children off to Hogwarts, providing a powerful sense of finality and thematic closure.
• In Forrest Gump, the resolution is Jenny’s death and Forrest’s acceptance of it. The denouement is the final scene where Forrest walks his son, Forrest Jr., to the school bus, showing that he has found his ultimate purpose as a loving father, bringing his epic journey to a quiet, poignant close.
