The Fanatical Follower

The Cultist is an archetypal character who functions as a follower within a cult. Unlike the Cult Leader, who is defined by their charisma and manipulative intelligence, the Cultist is defined by their absolute and unquestioning belief. Their individuality has been completely subsumed by the group’s ideology and their devotion to the leader. They have surrendered their critical thinking in exchange for a sense of purpose and belonging.

In horror, thriller, and fantasy films, cultists often serve as the primary antagonists that the hero must face, acting as the loyal soldiers or minions of the main villain.

Narrative Role and Characteristics

Cultists are effective antagonists for several reasons:

• Threat in Numbers: While an individual cultist may not be powerful, they are dangerous as a collective. They can overwhelm the hero through sheer numbers and coordinated action.
• Unpredictable and Unsettling: Their fanatical zeal makes them unpredictable. They are often portrayed with an unnerving calmness or a joyful willingness to commit horrific acts, which is deeply unsettling to the audience. Their lack of individuality can make them seem like a hive mind or an inhuman force.
• Willingness to Die: Their fanaticism means they are not afraid of death and are often willing to sacrifice themselves for their cause, making them incredibly dangerous and difficult to reason with.
• The Sympathetic Victim: In some narratives, a cultist may be portrayed more sympathetically, as a brainwashed victim who the protagonist attempts to rescue or deprogram. This can create a poignant subplot about the loss of identity and the possibility of redemption.

Cinematic Examples

• The Thuggee Cultists in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984): A classic example of cultists as villainous minions, fanatically devoted to their high priest Mola Ram and the goddess Kali.
• The Satanic Coven in Rosemary’s Baby (1968): A group of seemingly friendly, elderly neighbors are revealed to be a coven of cultists who have manipulated the protagonist into carrying the child of Satan.
• The Hårga Villagers in Midsommar (2019): An entire community of cultists whose cheerful, smiling demeanor masks their brutal and terrifying pagan rituals.
