Corny is a descriptor for a style of humor or sentimentality that is perceived as old-fashioned, unsophisticated, and lacking in originality. It is a milder and more innocent cousin to “cheesy.” While something cheesy often makes you cringe due to its failed attempt at being dramatic or cool, something corny is more likely to elicit a gentle eye-roll or a groan. It is the cinematic equivalent of a “dad joke”—predictable, a little lame, but often coming from a place of harmless sincerity.

Corniness is deeply tied to the passage of time. Tropes, jokes, and expressions of emotion that were once fresh and effective can become corny as cultural sensibilities change. What was a touching romantic gesture in a 1950s film might feel hopelessly corny to a modern audience.

• Innocent Romance: Depictions of love that are exceedingly chaste, simple, and reliant on well-worn romantic platitudes.
• Wholesome Endings: A perfectly neat and happy ending where every problem is resolved without any lingering ambiguity.
