Polishing the Performance

In the traditional 2D animation pipeline, the ‘clean-up’ stage is the crucial bridge between the rough, creative animation and the final, polished image that will be seen on screen. A key animator’s initial drawings are often done quickly and loosely, filled with multiple construction lines and expressive energy. While these roughs contain the essence of the performance and timing, they are not suitable for final production. The job of the clean-up artist is to translate this raw energy into a finished drawing.

The Art of the Clean Line

The role of a clean-up artist is a highly skilled and demanding one. They are not simply tracing the rough drawings. Their responsibilities include:

  • Interpreting the Roughs: They must understand the animator’s intent and select the definitive lines from the rough construction drawings.
  • Maintaining Volume and Form: They ensure that the character feels solid and three-dimensional, correcting any inconsistencies in proportion or structure that may have appeared in the roughs.
  • Adhering to the Model Sheet: They must ensure that every single drawing of the character is ‘on-model,’ meaning it perfectly matches the official design reference for that character.
  • Creating a Clean Line: They produce a single, elegant, and consistent line that is ready for the next stage of the process, which is traditionally inking and painting (or digital coloring in modern workflows).

A great clean-up artist preserves the life and energy of the original animation while creating a product that is polished, professional, and visually consistent.
