A character summary, also known as a character biography or character profile, is an in-depth document created by a writer to fully realize a story’s characters. It goes far beyond the information that is explicitly stated in the screenplay, serving as a foundational text that explores the inner life, history, and psychology of a character. This tool is essential for the writer to maintain consistency in the character’s voice and actions, and it becomes an invaluable resource for the director and the actor who will ultimately bring the character to life.

Components of a Rich Character Summary

A thorough character summary delves into multiple facets of a person’s life and personality:

• Biography and Backstory: Where were they born? What was their family life like? What are the key formative events—both positive and traumatic—that shaped who they are today?
• Psychology and Worldview: What is their greatest fear? What is their deepest desire? Are they an optimist or a pessimist? What is their moral code, and under what circumstances would they break it?
• Mannerisms and Physicality: How do they walk and talk? Do they have any nervous habits or distinctive gestures? What does their voice sound like?

3. The End Point: How the character has grown or changed by the end of the story, demonstrating a new understanding or overcoming their initial flaw.
