An Unlikely Friendship

The buddy film is a genre in which the central plot, regardless of its specific genre trappings (action, comedy, western, etc.), serves as a vehicle to explore the development of a relationship between two protagonists. The core of the film is the dynamic between these two characters: their banter, their conflicts, their moments of bonding, and their eventual, hard-won friendship or mutual respect. The genre thrives on pairing characters with contrasting personalities, creating a dynamic of friction and, ultimately, synthesis.

The Core Formula

Buddy films almost always follow a specific character arc for the central pair:

1. The Meeting: The two buddies are thrown together by circumstance. They are often polar opposites: one is cautious, the other is reckless; one is a slob, the other is neat; one is by-the-book, the other breaks the rules.
2. The Conflict: Their opposing personalities initially lead to constant bickering, arguments, and a mutual desire to get away from each other.
3. The Bonding: Through a series of shared trials and tribulations—a car chase, a mission, a road trip—they are forced to rely on one another. They begin to see each other’s strengths and learn from one another.
4. The Climax: The friendship is tested, often by an external threat or a final disagreement, but they ultimately come together, their bond solidified, to overcome the final obstacle.

Subgenres and Hybrids

The buddy formula is incredibly versatile and has been successfully blended with numerous other genres:

• Buddy Cop Film: The most popular subgenre, pairing two mismatched police officers. Examples: Lethal Weapon, 48 Hrs., Hot Fuzz.
• Buddy Comedy: The focus is purely on the comedic chemistry of the leads. Examples: Dumb and Dumber, Step Brothers, Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
• Buddy Road Movie: The journey format is used as the crucible to forge the friendship. Examples: Midnight Run, Green Book.
• Buddy Western: A classic pairing in the Old West. Examples: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

While traditionally focused on male friendships, the genre has expanded to include female pairings (Thelma & Louise, Booksmart) and platonic male-female friendships.
