The Voice in Post-Production
An ADR contract is a specific legal agreement that covers an actor’s work in an Automated Dialogue Replacement session. ADR, also known in the industry as ‘looping,’ is the process of re-recording dialogue in a controlled studio environment after filming has been completed. This is a common and essential part of film and television post-production. The ADR contract, typically governed by a performer’s union like SAG-AFTRA, ensures that actors are compensated fairly for this additional work, which takes place long after they have wrapped their on-set performance.
ADR is necessary for a variety of technical and creative reasons. Dialogue recorded on set can be ruined by background noise (like an airplane flying overhead), technical issues (like a rustling costume), or a flubbed line. A director might also want an actor to change the emotional tone or pacing of their line reading to better suit the final edit of a scene. In an ADR session, the actor stands in a recording booth, watches a loop of the scene on a screen, and performs the lines again and again, attempting to perfectly match their own on-screen lip movements. The ADR contract formalizes this process, treating it as a distinct performance worthy of its own terms.
Contractual Terms and Conditions
While the main actor’s overall film contract may include a clause requiring them to be available for ADR, the specifics of the session itself are often covered by standardized union agreements. An ADR contract will typically stipulate:
- Session Fees: A standardized rate for a session of a certain length (e.g., a 2-hour or 4-hour session). For principal actors, this is often a set fee, while for background actors performing ‘walla’ (see Loop Group Contract), it is a fixed daily rate.
- Overtime: Specific rates of pay for sessions that run longer than the agreed-upon time.
- Working Conditions: Rules regarding breaks and turnaround time to protect the actor’s vocal health and well-being.
- Billing Block: While the original performance is what grants an actor their on-screen credit, the ADR contract ensures that their contribution in post-production is officially part of their contracted work for the film.
For major stars, the obligation to perform ADR is a key part of their deal. For day players or guest stars, the ADR contract is a separate agreement that brings them back to the project weeks or months after they thought their work was done.
