Every additional bit doubles tonal precision: move from 12- to 16-bit RAW and you jump from 4 096 to 65 536 code values per color channel. That granularity translates to subtler highlight roll-off, smoother under-exposure recovery and cleaner keying in VFX pulls. Most modern cinema sensors actually read out 14-16 bits internally; lower-bit RAW formats discard or log-compress that information, whereas true 16-bit RAW writes sensor words straight to media. File wrappers vary—ARRIRAW (.ari), REDCODE HQX (.r3d), Sony’s X-OCN XT (.mxf)—but they share a commitment to scene-linear data and per-pixel black-shade calibration. The format’s data rates are punishing: uncompressed 16-bit 4K at 24 fps tips 1 GB/s, demanding high-throughput SSDs and RAID-10 archival. Handling 16-bit RAW requires a robust pipeline. Colorists relish the latitude: in Dune, Greig Fraser’s team could offset exposure by ±3 stops without contour banding. VFX supervisors prefer 16-bit OpenEXR deliveries, so maintaining 16-bit from capture through render minimizes bit-depth handoffs. Archival strategists, however, warn of storage inflation; Netflix mandates per-frame MD5 hashes to detect silent bit-rot across multi-petabyte cold stores. Camera vendors have begun offering visually lossless compression—ARRIRAW 3:1, REDCODE 5:1—that preserves 16-bit precision at manageable footprints.
