Brittney Havers Susan Ward, a South Florida high school senior, lives under the thumb of her wealthy but cruel stepfather, Niles Dunlap Tony Denison, after her mother was believed to have run her car off the road in “Gator Alley” and, as the story goes, was presumably eaten by alligators a year earlier. With Dunlap’s death in a private plane crash, Brittney learns that his will sets up a stark financial reality: she’ll receive only a small stipend until she finishes college, and after that, a lifelong yearly payment of $25,000, while the bulk of Dunlap’s wealth—about $70 million—is locked away in a corporate trust unless a blood heir can be located. The sudden loss and the insistence of wealth prompt Brittney to contemplate her future in a world where money often determines power and security.

The plot thickens when Brittney is threatened at home by Cicatriz [Ski Carr], a Cuban gambler to whom Dunlap owed millions. Insurance investigator Terence Bridge [Isaiah Washington] begins digging into the plane crash that killed Dunlap, chasing leads that might explain the circumstances surrounding the death. In reviewing Dunlap’s medical records, Bridge discovers a childhood scarlet fever infection that could have led to sterility—a troubling clue that raises questions about how Dunlap could have fathered a child. He presses Haynes for answers, and Haynes’ nervousness signals a conspiracy, causing him to contact Maya. The trio of Brittney, Maya, and Haynes arreges a midnight meeting at the docks where Maya shoots Haynes and the two women dispose of his body in Gator Alley, tightening their hold on the scheme.

Bridge, realizing the full extent of the deception, tries to expose the murders but is fired when he cannot produce damning proof. His pursuit intensifies after he finds Haynes’s blood and confronts Brittney at the Dunlap residence, demanding a share of the inheritance in exchange for not going to the police. Brittney refuses to surrender any of the money and pulls a gun on Bridge, yet the confrontation spirals into a lethal turn when she instead shoots Maya. When it’s Dunlap’s turn to bail out, Brittney reveals that his parachute has been sabotaged with newspaper and, with a sly smile, pushes him from the plane to his death. She then bails out safely, landing in a swamp boat where her mother, Brittney’s other survivor in this tale, awaits. The mother Kathy Neff is revealed to be very much alive, joining Brittney as their plan to reclaim Dunlap’s fortune comes to fruition.

The grand mystery of the scheme is resolved in a chilling revelation: Brittney and her mother orchestrated every death, including those of Brittney’s co-conspirators, to secure the wealth. They drift toward a sun-drenched future on a tropical island, where their lair overlooks the ocean and life seems to glow with new possibilities. Brittney descends the villa stairs with two drinks in hand, handing one to her mother, and when her mother remarks that the drinks are potent, Brittney delivers a wry, chilling reply that sums up their new reality: they are indeed in control now, and they know exactly how strong their schemes can be.
