Spoilers ahead
Brittney Havers Susan Ward, a South Florida high school senior, lives under the thumb of her wealthy but cruel stepfather, Niles Dunlap Tony Denison, after her mother was believed to have run her car off the road in “Gator Alley” and, as the story goes, was presumably eaten by alligators a year earlier. With Dunlap’s death in a private plane crash, Brittney learns that his will sets up a stark financial reality: she’ll receive only a small stipend until she finishes college, and after that, a lifelong yearly payment of $25,000, while the bulk of Dunlap’s wealth—about $70 million—is locked away in a corporate trust unless a blood heir can be located.
