Jimmy Grimble, Lewis McKenzie, is a shy teenager living in Oldham, Greater Manchester, raised by his single mother Donna Grimble, Gina McKee. Like many Mancunians, he loves football and supports Manchester City, but school life is rough. He endures bullying from popular kids and steadfast Manchester United fans, especially Gorgeous Gordon Burley and the volatile Psycho, Ciarán Griffiths. Jimmy trudges through classes with a quiet resilience, trying not to let the taunts derail his dreams on the pitch.

He joins the school football team, coached by Eric Wirral, a former City player who seems to care little for the team’s success and is constantly undermined by Gordon and his bragging father, Ken Burley. The team’s morale wavers under Ken’s blunt tactics—his go-to plan is simply to “pass it to Gordon”—but Wirral’s quiet expertise begins to shine through when he discovers fresh grit in his players. Jimmy’s confidence is further buoyed by a friendship with Sara and by an unlikely ally in Alice, an elderly homeless woman living in a derelict block slated for demolition. Alice, played by Jane Lapotaire, gifts Jimmy a pair of old football boots that she swears once belonged to Robbie Brewer, claiming they are magical. Jimmy accepts the gift with a mix of hope and skepticism, then sadly treats them as ordinary after disposing of them in a rubbish skip.

The turning point arrives during the Manchester School’s Cup away game against Wreckingham. In a muddy, heated match, Jimmy comes on as a substitute and scores a goal from his own half with his first touch—a moment that seems to prove the boots’ magic and fuels his growing confidence. Believing in the boots, he begins to outshine Gordon, who had previously been viewed as the team’s star. As Jimmy’s performances lift the team, a security steward hints at Robbie Brewer’s house near Maine Road, steering Jimmy toward the truth about the boots and the man who once spent time at City. There Jimmy learns that Wirral himself, the team’s teacher and coach, was once a City hero who earned a hat-trick against United, a fact that reconnects him with a lost passion for the game. Wirral’s belief in Jimmy starts to win over the rest of the squad, including Psycho, and the team begins to rally behind their coach rather than Ken’s dismissive approach.

Away from the pitch, life at home grows more complicated. Donna begins dating her new partner, Johnny Two Dogs, Ben Miller, a swaggering motorcycle enthusiast who tries to project toughness even though he isn’t really a football fan. Jimmy still longs for the old connection with his mother, and he occasionally encounters Harry, Donna’s former partner who once played a bigger role in his life. Johnny attempts to bridge the gap by taking Jimmy to a City game, but his behavior in a pub confrontation reveals he isn’t the hard man Jimmy hoped for, adding strain to an already tense relationship between mother and son.

Demolition in Alice’s neighborhood looms closer, and Jimmy is haunted by the sight of her squatting home being torn apart. He manages to halt the demolition long enough to search for Alice, only to discover she has died outside in the cold. Donna’s world fractures as she discovers Johnny with another woman, a moment that tests their fragile reconciliation. Before the final, the school’s headmaster John McArdle warns Wirral that funding for a new sports hall roof might be pulled to pressure the team to keep Jimmy on the substitute bench, a tactic that backfires when the players refuse to play without him. Gordon’s plan to steal Jimmy’s boots again is foiled by the team’s unity, and Jimmy, discouraged by a rough first half that leaves them 2–0 down, finds new resolve.

At halftime, a blind programme seller—revealed to be Robbie Brewer—draws Jimmy to a revelation about the boots and his mother’s past. The truth is that the magic wasn’t in the boots alone; it was in Jimmy’s own burgeoning skill and the support around him. Renewed, the team returns for the second half and Jimmy reclaims his place on the field. He quickly scores and then provides a crucial assist to Gordon for the equaliser. Reclaiming the ball from his own half, he drives forward and, choosing selfless play over personal glory, delivers a powerful pass into the box that smashes Gordon’s face, knocking him over and securing the winner for the team. Donna and Harry share a quiet reconciliation in the stands as Jimmy’s triumph is celebrated by the crowd.

In the tunnel after the match, Ken presses the United scout to sign Gordon, but the scout shifts his attention to Jimmy, asking what would be “better than Man United.” Jimmy responds with a simple, decisive moment of conviction: [Man City]. The scout, unmoved by Ken’s pressure, offers the place to the team’s goalkeeper instead, leaving Jimmy with a lingering sense of what he values most.
