Dorothy and Toto are swept from Kansas by a tornado

A tornado tears across Dorothy's Kansas farm and lifts her house into the air, carrying Dorothy and her dog Toto away to a magical land. They awaken in the strange, colorful world of Oz after the house lands with a thud on the Wicked Witch of the East. The tornado marks the beginning of Dorothy's perilous journey home.

Dorothy meets the Good Witch of the North and the Munchkins; receives the ruby slippers

In the Land of Oz, the Good Witch of the North explains that the Wicked Witch of the East has been defeated, freeing the Munchkins from tyranny. She gives Dorothy the magical ruby slippers and directs her to seek help from the Wizard of Oz in Emerald City. She warns Dorothy to stay on the Yellow Brick Road and places a protective kiss on her forehead.

Dorothy teams up with friends to seek the Wizard

Dorothy befriends the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion, who join her journey to see the Wizard. They decide to travel together along the Yellow Brick Road toward the Emerald City, hoping the Wizard can grant their wishes as well. The unlikely group bonds over their shared goal of finding a way home and improving themselves.

The Kalidah attacks the group

About halfway to their destination, the group is ambushed by a Kalidah, a fearsome creature half tiger and half bear. They manage to fend it off and press on toward the Emerald City. The encounter tests their courage and resolve on the journey.

They cross a river on a raft

The river blocks their path to the Emerald City, so they improvise a raft and sail across together. The crossing is a small but important step toward their goal, and they gain a new sense of camaraderie. They emerge on the far bank ready to press toward the Wizard.

Arrival at Emerald City and the Wizard's first appearances

The party reaches the glittering Emerald City, where the Wizard appears to each of them in a different form: a giant talking head for Dorothy, a beautiful winged lady for the Scarecrow, a rhinoceros-like monster for the Tin Woodman, and a ball of fire for the Cowardly Lion. He tells them he can grant their wishes but only if they first defeat the Wicked Witch of the West. The illusion of power hides his true nature.

The Wizard assigns the challenge to defeat the Wicked Witch

The Wizard confirms his conditional offer: their desires will be granted only after they face and defeat the Wicked Witch of the West. He does not reveal his limitations or how much he can truly help. The group steels themselves for the dangerous journey to confront the Witch.

The Witch learns of their approach and prepares

From her crystal ball the Wicked Witch learns of Dorothy and her companions' departure and immediately mobilizes defenses. She sends minions to stop them and maintains her hold over Oz while the heroes head west. The Witch's schemes grow bolder as the final confrontation approaches.

Wolves attack and are defeated by the Tin Woodman

As they advance, the Witch's wolves lunge at the party, but the Tin Woodman defeats them with steady bladework and courage. The near miss deepens the group's resolve as they move deeper into the Witch's domain. The Witch's control over Oz tightens in response.

A flock of crows morph into a giant crow; Scarecrow outwits them

The Witch sends a flock of crows that morph into a monstrous crow, but the Scarecrow uses quick thinking to outwit them and protect the group. The near-disaster strengthens their teamwork and determination. They continue toward the Witch's stronghold.

Winged Monkeys capture the group; Dorothy protected by the North Witch's mark

The Witch unleashes Winged Monkeys that manage to capture the group, but Dorothy is spared from harm due to the protective mark left by the Witch of the North. The others are captured, yet Dorothy's safety keeps hope alive for a rescue and a future escape.

Dorothy defeats the Witch with a splash of water

Dorothy confronts the Witch and, in a defining moment, a splash of water causes the Witch to shrink and disappear forever. With the Witch defeated, the Winkies are freed from slavery and the path back toward Oz opens. The group gains renewed hope to finish their quest.

Back in Emerald City, the Wizard's sham is revealed

The group returns to Emerald City and discovers that the Wizard is merely a humbug, a circus magician with no real magical powers. He explains that they already possess what they sought—courage, a heart, a brain, and a way home—and he offers to take Dorothy home by balloon, which ultimately fails to carry her and Toto. Glinda, the Good Witch of the South, later reveals that Dorothy could have returned home all along with the ruby slippers.
