Journey Back to Oz 1972

Dorothy, Liza Minnelli, awakens in the fantastical land of Oz after a Kansas tornado flings her into unfamiliar skies, Toto at her heel and a world of color spreading before them. A talking Signpost, Jack E. Leonard, greets her with three signs all pointing toward Emerald City, each direction oddly labeled with the same destination. From this moment, the journey begins in earnest as Dorothy and her new guide press on toward the heart of Oz.

They soon cross paths with Pumpkinhead, Paul Lynde, a reluctant helper bound to the enigmatic witch Mombi, who stands as a cousin to the infamous Wicked Witches of the East and West. In a cottage shadowed by magic, Dorothy is seized by Mombi’s crow, Mel Blanc, while Mombi herself prowls nearby. Pumpkinhead slips inside in a risky rescue, uncovering Mombi’s latest creation: a legion of green elephants designed to storm the Emerald City. With Dorothy freed, the trio bolts for safety, but the threat remains imminent as Mombi promises trouble if they bare their warning to the Scarecrow.

On their way, they come upon Woodenhead Stallion III, Herschel Bernardi, a former merry-go-round horse who becomes their steadfast transport. The trio rides toward the Emerald City, where Dorothy urges the Scarecrow, Mickey Rooney, to brace for Mombi’s onslaught. Moments later, Toto and the Scarecrow are captured, and Dorothy, Pumpkinhead, and Woodenhead flee north to Tinland to seek help from the Tin Man, Danny Thomas. The Tin Man, who has his own songs to share, is wary of fighting magic-driven elephants and initially declines, preferring a smarter plan.

Seeking counsel, they turn to the Cowardly Lion, Milton Berle, who offers to confront the elephants but quickly backs away once he learns their size and magic. He suggests consulting Glinda the Good Witch, Ris Stevens, who appears with a magical companion—the Glinda Bird—that uses its Tattle Tail to reveal what’s happening at the palace. Glinda admits she can’t single-handedly defeat Mombi, and she gifts Dorothy a small silver box of countermagic. It can be opened only in Emerald City and only in a dire emergency, a beacon of hope tucked away for later trials.

From a distance, Mombi spies Dorothy’s progress through her crystal ball and retaliates by animating nearby trees. In response, Glinda dispatches a golden hatchet to Pumpkinhead. A clash with the trees ensues: one tree seizes the hatchet, then, strangely, the others are swayed toward gold, turning from antagonists into allies. Woodenhead carries Dorothy and Pumpkinhead back toward the Emerald City, only to face a surprise from Mombi’s elephants.

Dorothy bravely opens Glinda’s mysterious box, and out rush tiny mice that scatter the elephants in panic. Mombi counters with a shrinking potion aimed at Toto, intending to feed him to her cat, but the chaos backfires as her crow and cat are miniaturized instead. In a further disguise, Mombi shifts into a poisonous rose, yet Toto’s persistence drives the elephant herd to trample her, ending her magic with her death. The loss of Mombi’s power also ends the magic that sustained Pumpkinhead, though Dorothy’s tear restores him to life.

With Mombi defeated, the Scarecrow elevates Woodenhead to lead the Oz cavalry, and Pumpkinhead is knighted to join the ranks. The land beyond seems safer for a moment, but the bond forged in escape remains strong. Dorothy and Toto prepare to depart Oz, joined by the help of their friends, and, in a final act of friendship and resilience, they ride a fresh tornado—crafted by Pumpkinhead with Glinda’s help—back toward Kansas, vowing to return to Oz when the time is right.
