The Hero of Color City 2014

Six-year-old Ben is sketching a regal king named King Scrawl and a small, insect-like creature named Gnat when his mom quietly asks him to sleep. As darkness settles, Ben’s unfinished drawings glow to life, and the crayons leap from their box to slip into a magical realm called Color City. One crayon, Yellow, is left behind and arrives a moment late, drawing the attention of King Scrawl and Gnat who both crave color for themselves.

In Color City, Yellow reunites with the other colors—Red, Green, Blue, Black, and White—and the friends head to Madame Pink’s Spa to repair the wear and tear from their recent use. During a gentle conversation with Madame Pink, Yellow confesses feelings of being ordinary, and Pink reassures her that she is special in her own way. After a soothing treatment, Yellow decides to join a beach party at a lighthouse, pedaling through the kaleidoscopic streets of Color City on her bike.

No sooner has the celebration begun than King Scrawl and Gnat snatch Yellow away and kidnap her to the top of a towering skyscraper. A rescue arrives when Sheriff Tan uses a paper airplane to free Yellow, but Scrawl and Gnat sprint toward the Rainbow Colorfall—the brilliant, ever-shifting stream that serves as the crayons’ source of color. They dive in and attempt to block the Colorfall with nearby boulders, threatening the vibrant life of Color City.

In the wake of the obstruction, the town convenes a decisive meeting. Professor Heliotrope gives a lecture on the possible danger Scrawl poses, explaining that if the Colorfall remains blocked, the crayons will stop receiving new color. They will fade to grey and eventually vanish. Brown volunteers to form a team, and all of Yellow’s friends pledge to help stop the threat.

The color crew heads out on the SS R.G.B Huey, determined to reach the Colorfall. A mishap at a fork in the path sets Green in charge of guiding, and their journey quickly spirals into trouble as the ship crashes and strands them far from Color City. Back home, Color City begins to lose its brightness as the shipwreck forces the crayons to confront their fading world.

In a stretch of desert, White scans the horizon and discovers more unfinished drawings that the others once mistook for monsters. Those sketches, when approached with courage, reveal themselves as allies and rewards, coloring the travelers with new energy. As the voyage continues, King Scrawl unexpectedly saves Yellow from the Trashasaur—a drawing-eating dinosaur—helping Yellow see that Scrawl and Gnat also want color and friendship, not just power.

With the crew’s growing understanding, Yellow helps clear up the misunderstanding that had divided them. The nearly colorless group, along with the unfinished drawings, works together to pull out the blocking boulders. Their combined effort tears away the dam and releases the Colorfall, reviving Color City and restoring the vibrant hue to every corner of their world.

A celebration returns to Color City, where King Scrawl and Gnat are finally colored and welcomed as part of the community. Yellow is honored with the Medal of the Hero of Color City by Sheriff Tan and Professor Heliotrope, recognizing her courage and leadership. The city’s colors flow back into the streets, lighting up faces and rooftops with a renewed splash of life.

Back in the real world, Ben awakens to find that his once unfinished drawings have been colored on his wall. The crayons are still there, perched on the page, but Yellow and King Scrawl exchange a knowing wink as Ben reaches for Yellow to start a new drawing, signaling that imagination and collaboration have bridged the gap between make-believe and reality.
