Space probe returns and microbes are studied

A space probe returns to Earth, and its samples are rushed to Dr Charles Pommer's home laboratory. He quickly discovers the microbes lie dormant until fed protein and that they can multiply rapidly, leading him to theorize that Mars was turned into a wasteland by the fungus Blood Rust.

Blood Rust identified as a global threat

Pommer concludes Blood Rust could be carried between people and pose a global threat. He warns that the fungus could spread and contaminate populations if not contained.

Pommer is attacked and dies

The Blood Rust claims Pommer as its first victim at his remote house. Before dying, he manages to phone Agent John Hand to warn him of the danger.
