Pollution forces haenyeo into smuggling

In 1974, the coastal village of Guncheon is choked by pollution from a nearby chemical plant, driving the haenyeo to struggle. Facing dwindling catches, the divers are drawn toward a dangerous new plan: using their boat Maengryong-ho for underwater smuggling to make money. The shift marks the start of a slippery path from subsistence fishing to organized crime.

Chun-ja recruits the others

Chun-ja persuades the other haenyeo to join the gold smuggling scheme, though Captain Um initially balks at the higher risk. They decide to retrieve goods dumped underwater in exchange for money, setting the stage for a sudden prosperity in their impoverished village. The tension between loyalty and greed begins to mount.

The fateful smuggling run

Underwater smuggling begins, but a box breaks open just as customs officers led by Lee Jang-chun close in. The crew scrambles to escape as the ship’s anchor jams, Jin-sook’s brother Jin-goo is knocked unconscious, and Captain Um dies heroically trying to save him. The operation falls apart amid chaos.

Arrests and imprisonments

The sudden spree of events leads to arrests; most of the haenyeo are jailed while Jin-sook bears the heaviest sentence as the supposed mastermind. Chun-ja slips away unseen, becoming a fugitive from the law. The village reels from betrayal and grief as the courts take their toll.

Aftermath and vengeance

As the prisoners are slowly released, Jin-sook and the others suspect Chun-ja of tipping off the customs, though Chun-ja never visits them in prison. A vow of revenge hardens Jin-sook as she awaits the day they can confront the woman she believes betrayed them. The rift between former allies widens and memories simmer beneath the surface.

Chun-ja’s capture in Seoul

Years later, Chun-ja has built a smuggling operation in Seoul when she is captured by a powerful smuggler, Kwon Pil-sam, and subjected to torture. He offers her an alternative route through Guncheon, hoping to exploit police scrutiny on existing routes. The experience pushes her to align with new players rather than her old crew.

Reuniting with old contact Jang Do-ri

Reconnecting with her old community, Chun-ja is forced to work with Jang Do-ri, a former crewmate who has become a major smuggler. The uneasy alliance disrupts Chun-ja’s sense of control and hints at a shifting power dynamic among Guncheon’s illicit networks. The past and present collide as Do-ri becomes a new rival and partner at once.

Chun-ja returns to Guncheon with Kwon

Returning to Guncheon with Kwon, Chun-ja continues the smuggling operation but faces the resentful Jin-sook and the rest of her crew. The uneasy reunion forces old wounds to reopen as trust becomes the scarcest commodity in their world. Chun-ja also reveals why she hid from them: she was wanted for stabbing a man who raped her.

Incriminating informant and new schemes

After one of Jin-sook’s friends is attacked by a shark, Jin-sook is coerced into working with Chun-ja to cover medical bills, while Go Ok-bun steals an informant file from the customs to validate Chun-ja’s innocence. The web of deceit grows as both sides use informants to outmaneuver their rivals. The balance of trust becomes a weapon in the smuggling war.

Do-ri’s treachery exposed

Chun-ja exposes Do-ri’s treachery to Jin-sook and learns that Do-ri was in league with the customs officer Lee Jang-chun, complicating trust within the crew. Ok-bun’s plan to sow distrust becomes a crucial lever in the coming power plays. The crew prepares to pit Do-ri and Jang-chun against each other.

The attack on the rival operation

Do-ri and his men strike Chun-ja and Kwon’s operation, forcing a tense escape. Kwon’s second-in-command dies heroically, while Kwon himself perishes after a brutal fight. Chun-ja uses the diamonds as leverage to bargain for her life, securing a lucrative but precarious deal worth $300 million.

The underwater diamond showdown

Jang-chun orders Jin-sook and her crew to dive for a diamond under threat of elimination. The underwater fight is brutal, but the haenyeo prove their mastery, fending off the thugs. Do-ri tries to seize control, but Jin-sook’s group foils him as tension and danger peak.

Do-ri’s doom at sea

Do-ri grabs Jang-chun’s shotgun and forces the crew to help retrieve the diamonds, but Chun-ja’s team uses a trap and knocks him off balance. Do-ri falls into the water, where sharks—attracted by his injuries—close in. He begs Jin-sook to save him, but she coldly rejects him as the sharks close in.
