During Queen Victoria’s reign, British forces led by Lord Hillock seize Tapuah and crush the local population with brutal mass executions. Among the victims are the mother and brothers of the pirate Sandokan, and in reprisal he forms a revolutionary band to challenge the occupiers. When Hillock schemes to trap the rebels by threatening to hang his father, the Sultan of Mulaker, Mary Ann is taken hostage and brought into Hillock’s home. At first, she is furious, but she soon finds her feelings shifting as she grows to understand the man who holds her.
After a run-in with headhunters, Sandokan and his men are surrounded by Hillock’s forces, and an armistice is negotiated: Sandokan and his band will be exiled in exchange for Mary Ann’s release. Hillock, however, breaks the agreement almost at once, imprisoning the rebels and planning their immediate execution. In a daring escape, the insurgents break free, and Mary Ann chooses to join them as they flee.
With the help of the native chieftain Tuang Olong’s army, the resistance expands to reclaim the homeland from British domination. The final battle leaves the officers responsible for Sandokan’s family deaths dead, while Hillock is allowed to leave the land unharmed. In a poignant turn, Mary Ann defies her uncle’s hopes and decides to stay with Sandokan, bound to him as his bride.
