Out-of-work cowhands Dick McBride and Chito Rafferty ride into the town of Trail Cross, Arizona, and immediately confront Wheeler, a rustler eager for trouble. Saloon brawl and Carew's intervention

Wheeler takes offense at Trixie Fontaine's attention to Chito, and a brawl erupts in the saloon. Saloon owner Brad Carew, an ally of Wheeler's Salt River gang, breaks up the fight and orders Wheeler to the Bar One ranch. Carew's action shows his role as the gang's enforcer in Trail Cross.

Ransom note and Ruth's plan

At the Bar One ranch, Frank Abbott and neighbors discuss the gang's cattle thefts while Wheeler delivers a ransom note. The gang demands $2,000, but Frank refuses to pay and contemplates selling the ranch. Ruth proposes using marked money to identify the rustlers, turning the ransom into a trap.

Ruth marks the money and the road to Bar One

Ruth cuts the corners from the ransom bills to mark them for later identification. Dick and Chito ride toward the Bar One after answering a 'help wanted' notice, hoping to find work. Along the way, Ruth fires on them thinking they are rustlers; Dick disarms her and playfully chides her crossness.
