Richard Martin (1754-05-15 – 1834) was an Irish politician and pioneering animal‑rights activist whose career spanned the turbulent years of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Born in Dublin to a prosperous Anglo‑Irish family, Martin entered the world of public service as a member of the Irish House of Commons, representing County Galway from 1790 until the Act of Union dissolved the Irish parliament in 1801. After the Union he continued to serve in the United Kingdom Parliament, where he became renowned for his impassioned pleas against cruelty to animals, earning him the affectionate nickname "Humanity Dick". Martin’s most lasting legacy emerged in 1824 when he helped found the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (later the RSPCA), becoming its first president and championing legislation that criminalised animal abuse for the first time in British law. His advocacy extended beyond legislation; he authored pamphlets and delivered public lectures, using vivid rhetoric and personal anecdotes to sway public opinion during a period when animal welfare was largely ignored.
