In Tucson, Arizona, ex-convict Joe Powell [Walter Reed] shows his girlfriend Cleo Raymond [Lois Andrews] a forged Spanish land grant tucked in his wallet, a glint of trouble and a possible path to a better life for them both. Corrupt promoter Clyde Arnold [Harry Woods], and his henchmen, Trigg McCord [Tony Barrett] and Pike Haskins [Robert Bray], strike Powell hard, seizing both the wallet and Powell’s body. Arnold, now posing as Powell, takes the fake grant to Judge Winston [Jason Robards Sr.] and his niece Beth Winston [Nan Leslie] to test its validity, a move that tugs at the town’s nerves and trust.

Judge Winston travels to Santa Fe and returns, declaring the grant good, which spurs Arnold to use it to evict local landowners. As Trigg McCord and Pike Haskins dispose of Powell’s body, Ross Daggett [Tim Holt] and Chito Rafferty [Richard Martin] intervene, and a firefight breaks out that ends with Pike’s death. They relay their suspicions to Judge Winston, who confirms with Cleo that Powell’s land grant was forged, shaking the foundations of Arnold’s deception. Realizing he could be exposed, Arnold leads his gang to intercept the stagecoach carrying Cleo and Judge Winston, hoping to silence the threat once and for all.

Ross [Tim Holt] intervenes in the ensuing confrontation, a tense gunfight erupting as dust swirls around the desert road, while Chito [Richard Martin] brings a posse that scatters the attackers. Arnold’s grip loosens as Ross subdues him and recovers the forged land grant, exposing Arnold’s true identity to all. With the truth laid bare, the danger subsides, and a sense of relief settles over the trio of Ross, Beth, and Cleo, who ride off together with Chito, who smiles and declares that he and Ross are now rich enough to marry.
