Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins 1985

Sam Macon, portrayed by Fred Ward, is a dedicated NYPD officer who finds himself caught in a perilous situation when he intervenes during a mugging one fateful night. This act of bravery takes a dark turn as he is violently pushed into the river while still trapped in his car. After this harrowing incident, he awakens in a hospital with a completely altered appearance. Enter J.A. Preston as MacCleary, the man responsible for the accident that changed Macon’s life. MacCleary reveals to him that he will now take on the identity of Remo Williams, a name whimsically derived from one found on a bedpan. Remo is informed that he has been recruited by a mysterious organization known as CURE, which operates in the shadows, unseen by the government that corruptly overlooks its activities.

MacCleary, recognizing Remo’s unique qualities—having no family ties and a robust military background—believes he is the perfect candidate for this secretive program. In a series of twists, Remo steals an ambulance, inadvertently carrying Mac with him, who then introduces him to Wilford Brimley, the enigmatic head of CURE, Harold Smith. Smith paints a grim picture of government corruption and explains that Remo is to become their covert troubleshooter. With access to every network, Smith relies on Mac to guide Remo on his unfamiliar journey.

The initial task thrust upon Remo is chilling: kill a man inside a building pointed out by Mac. Armed with a pistol, Remo stealthily enters, only to find himself confronted by an elderly Korean man, an unexpected target who turns out to be his new instructor, Chiun. This encounter is anything but ordinary as Remo realizes that he must face Chiun’s otherworldly agility and incredible speed, leading to his swift disarmament and an unforeseen introduction to the ancient martial art of Sinanju. The chase leads to a humorous yet painful collision with a piano, as Mac watches, eager for a quick assessment. Chiun bluntly informs him that although Remo’s hand-to-hand skills are lacking, there may be a glimmer of hope.

Meanwhile, Smith uncovers dubious activities tied to defense contractor George Grove, played by Charles Cioffi, who is linked to troubling rumors surrounding the HARP defense system. Trouble brews further when Major Rayner Fleming, interpreted by Kate Mulgrew, discovers someone attempting to investigate these concerns. Refusing to be sidelined, she promptly alerts her superior, General Scott Watson, portrayed by George Coe, and emphasizes her upcoming attendance at a weapons demonstration by Grove.

As Remo undertakes his rigorous training with Chiun, their relationship evolves. Initially met with harsh insults and a notoriously restrictive diet of rice, Remo gradually proves his mettle. Together, they work on balance and breath control, leading to a begrudging respect that grows between them despite Chiun’s refusal to acknowledge it outwardly. The training leads Remo to some astonishing abilities, including running without leaving a track and dodging bullets with breathtaking agility.

At the upcoming demonstration, the flaws of the weapons become painfully evident when a soldier loses his life due to a malfunction caused during testing. Major Fleming becomes increasingly suspicious as ominous signs point towards foul play within Grove’s operation. Grove’s agitation grows as he attempts to downplay the incident, instructing his henchman, Patrick Kilpatrick, to tail Fleming directly. With tensions rising, the safety of Remo and his allies hangs by a thread, leading Grove to order Remo’s execution.

In a climactic encounter atop the iconic Statue of Liberty, Remo is pitted against Stone’s goons but emerges victorious using his newly honed skills, even while Stone manages to escape. Frustrated by the developments, Remo confides in Smith and Mac, who indicate that they may need to plan an escape route—quite ominously implying that it might end in death at Chiun’s hands, which drives Remo to storm off in anger.

In a desperate move, Mac convinces Remo to infiltrate one of Grove’s warehouses, where they encounter ferocious dogs and hungry rats. Amid the chaos, Remo discovers a satellite system which they ultimately destroy, triggering an alarm that prompts guards to chase after them. In the frenzy, Mac is gravely injured, yet he sacrifices himself heroically, passing on a computer disk containing critical information for Smith to decipher.

As the plot thickens, Remo, armed with renewed determination, takes the fight to Grove. A frantic pursuit ensues, culminating in their capture inside a gas chamber where they confront the ominous henchman Wilson. In a display of clever resourcefulness, Remo escapes using Stone’s diamond dental work, showcasing his transformation into the formidable troubleshooter he was meant to be.

The situation escalates as they find themselves in a chaotic pursuit involving military forces. In a startling act of bravery, Chiun manages to reach out to Remo even as he is confronted by troops, inadvertently calling him “my son,” a metaphorical gesture that underscores their burgeoning bond. With chaos surrounding them, Remo finds himself chased and ultimately disarms Grove before igniting the jeep he was driving, taking down the antagonist once and for all.

In a heart-pounding finale on the beach, Remo reunites with Fleming, who conveys that Chiun set out to find him after the dust settled. They witness Chiun making an incredible leap across the water, urging Remo to run fast. As they escape together, they share a moment of levity as Remo quips, “Would you believe we’re the good guys?” Chiun’s childish excitement about rushing home to catch his favorite soap opera showcases the unexpected yet profound camaraderie forged through their trials. Thus concludes a whirlwind journey filled with adventure, humor, and the unlikeliest of friendships in the realm of espionage and martial arts.
