With the assistance of legendary heroes such as Zhao Yun and Zhang Fei, they navigate the treacherous waters of the Great River (known as the Yangtze) to seek refuge with Sun Quan, the leader of the southern territories.

As Cao Cao readies his vast naval fleet to invade the south with intentions to annihilate both Liu Bei and Sun Quan, brilliant strategists like Zhuge Liang and Zhou Yu concert their efforts into a grand battle strategy. Their goal is to destroy Cao Cao’s 10,000 ships by employing fire as a weapon upon the river — but they must first deceive him into chaining his ships together and manipulate the notorious North Wind, known for its chilling gusts.

Within the volatile backdrop of an ancient war, tensions rise as they navigate the complex rivalries between Liu Bei and Sun Quan’s factions and race against the clock to devise their fabled plans. This narrative draws inspiration from the time-honored tale “Romance of the Three Kingdoms,” which holds a cherished place in the hearts of over 1 billion Chinese people and stands as one of Asia’s most renowned novels.

In a conversation with CCTV-6, director John Woo revealed that the film primarily references the historical record Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms to depict the Battle of Red Cliffs, rather than the traditional novel, presenting characters like Cao Cao and Zhou Yu with a more nuanced, historically accurate portrayal.

The story unfolds in two parts:

Part 1: During the sweltering summer of AD 208, the imperial army spearheaded by Chancellor (or Prime Minister) Cao Cao embarks on a mission to eradicate the southern warlords, Sun Quan and Liu Bei, under the pretense of quelling insurrection, with reluctant approval from the Emperor. Swiftly, Cao Cao’s might overtakes the southern province of Jingzhou, igniting the Battle of Changban. As chaos erupts, the valiant warriors Zhuge Liang](/actor/fengyi-zhang), [uan Yu, and Zhang Fei displaying extraordinary combat skill, manage to buy precious time for the civilians to escape while facing the onslaught. Zhao Yun, driven by loyalty, ventures into danger attempting to rescue Liu Bei’s family but only succeeds in saving Liu’s infant son. Subsequently, Liu Bei’s chief advisor, Zhuge Liang, embarks on a diplomatic undertaking to Eastern Wu to forge an alliance with Sun Quan to unite against Cao Cao.

Initially conflicted about engaging in combat, Sun Quan is swayed to resist after Zhuge Liang eloquently persuades him, alongside an enlightening tiger hunt involving Zhou Yu and his sister, Sun Shangxiang. Meanwhile, Cao Cao’s naval commanders, Cai Mao and Zhang Yun, defect to his side, earning his favor and a command over his navy. The conflict begins as Sun Shangxiang mobilizes a light cavalry to bait Cao Cao’s advance troops into the Eight Trigrams Formation set by the allied forces, resulting in a resounding defeat for Cao Cao’s vanguard. Despite the setback, Cao Cao remains unperturbed, establishing his camp directly across from the allies, where festivities commence in celebration. However, Zhuge Liang ponders a plan to penetrate Cao Cao’s camp through a cunning spy operation, and with messages transmitted via pigeon, he maintains contact with Sun Shangxiang.

As tensions build, Part 2 sees Sun Shangxiang successfully infiltrating Cao Cao’s camp, gathering crucial intelligence while disease—typhoid fever—sweeps through his forces, claiming numerous lives. In a devious maneuver, Cao Cao dispatches the corpses to the allies’ camp, an attempt to spread the illness. The morale of the allied army wanes when the plague finds its way in, leading a weary Liu Bei to withdraw with his forces while Zhuge Liang remains to assist Eastern Wu.

When Cao Cao’s naval commanders suggest a method to interlock their battleships to prevent rocking, Zhou Yu and Zhuge Liang scramble to strategize, each determined to eliminate Cao Cao’s commanders while covering for one another. With ingenuity, Zhuge Liang’s tactic of acquiring 100,000 arrows using straw boats raises suspicions around Cai Mao and Zhang Yun’s loyalty, resulting in their executions after Cao Cao is manipulated into believing they plotted against him.

As Sun Shangxiang returns with vital information from Cao Cao’s encampment, the allied forces learn that a favorable South-East Wind is imminent. They prepare to launch an assault, with Zhou Yu courageously opting to forgo the self-torture ruse proposed by Huang Gai in hopes of a brighter outcome. The night of the battle falls when the winds favor the Eastern Wu forces, leading them into a full-scale inferno against Cao Cao’s naval fleet, while Liu Bei’s troops attack from land.

By dawn, Cao Cao’s navy is left in ruins, and the alliance, though enduring heavy casualties, pushes their advantage on land. However, as Zhou Yu is caught by surprise, Zhao Yun manages to turn the tide, heroically rescuing Xiao Qiao and shifting power back toward the allied forces. Ultimately, they confront Cao Cao, sparing his life and delivering a warning never to return, as a blend of victory and foreboding hangs in the air.
