A violent outlaw band led by Blackjack Britton and Cavin Guthrie robs a bank, setting off a chain of tense moments that pull Sonny, Cavin’s young nephew, into a fate he never expected. In the chaos of the ensuing gunfight, Dolly Sloan, a prostitute connected to the crew, is shot and dies in Cavin’s arms, a stark reminder of the costs behind the men’s lawless ambitions. The gang bolts, hotly pursued by a determined posse, and they manage a narrow escape through a ferocious dust storm, slipping into a hidden tunnel that leads them into a lush, green valley far from the trouble they left behind.

Upon reaching Refuge, a town that welcomes them with unusual hospitality, the gang finds a community that seems to live by a different code. The residents do not carry guns or swear, and they stream toward the church whenever the bells toll, creating an eerie sense that they are living in a space shaped by ritual more than violence. Sonny, the youngest of the outlaws, begins to sense that the town’s gentleness may conceal something extraordinary, and he starts to dream that some of the familiar figures he’s read about in dime novels might be standing among them.

As the night unfolds, Sonny befriends a woman named Rose, who answers his questions with careful honesty and asks him pointed ones in return, beginning with the haunting line, “How many men have you killed?” The rest of Blackjack’s gang lingers in the saloon, and tensions rise as one member is struck by lightning in a prelude to violence, just as he prepares to throw a knife at the church door. His body is carried away by a Native American figure who guards the gates to a mist-filled property beyond town, a sign that Refuge is governed by rules beyond ordinary law.

Sonny’s investigations reveal that Refuge is inhabited by former notorious gunfighters who deny their true identities to him—among them Wild Bill Hickok, Billy the Kid, Jesse James, and Doc Holliday. They carry a heavy secret, and Sonny’s questions continue to press at the edges of what the townspeople are willing to reveal. A gardener named Lamb becomes a focal point, and when Sonny prompts him to admit who he truly is, the truth flickers on the surface. The moment is disrupted when Blackjack’s men trample Lamb’s garden, and Lamb, enraged, beats one attacker to death with a shovel before being led away by a mysterious Gatekeeper.

Blackjack orders the rest of his gang to gather in the saloon while Sonny, left out, slips back in to overhear Cavin’s plan to rape Rose. If they can endure ten years without giving in to the temptations of their former lives, they will be admitted to Heaven. A moment of brutal realism follows as Sonny leaves the church and is confronted by Blackjack and Cavin, who beat him unconscious. The next morning, battered but resolute, Sonny arms himself and prepares to face Blackjack’s gang alone. The town bells summon the faithful to defend their fragile sanctuary, and Hickok, Holliday, Jesse James, and Billy the Kid all answer the call, moved by Sonny’s willingness to die for Rose. A thunderous shootout erupts, and Blackjack’s gang is slaughtered; Cavin wounds Sonny before he falls, though Sonny’s pain remains strangely absent, and he does not die. Hickok greets him as he enters Refuge, recognizing that Sonny has earned a second chance.

When Blackjack finally arrives to challenge Hickok, the moment lands with grim finality: “I guess I’m one of you now.” Hickok counters calmly, “I wouldn’t count on it,” and the confrontation ends with Blackjack’s defeat. The Gatekeeper then carries Cavin and Blackjack beyond the misty gates toward a fiery pit, a grim procession that mirrors the town’s mystery. Hickok and the others follow, but a stagecoach arrives to mark a new choice. The driver speaks with quiet certainty: by choosing to protect others even at personal cost, they have earned a place in Heaven.

In the twilight of the tale, Sonny asks to stay behind with Rose, but Hickok bestows upon him the sheriff’s badge as a symbol of responsibility and leadership. The coach pulls away, rising toward the light as Refuge seals its own fate—an elevated path earned not through violence, but through sacrifice and protection of those who remain.
