Picnic at Hanging Rock 2018

On Valentine’s Day 1900, a group of students from Appleyard College, a private girls’ school located in Victoria, Australia, set out for a picnic at the mysterious Hanging Rock, accompanied by their teachers, Miss Greta McCraw and Mlle de Poitiers. Among the students is Sara (/actor/harrison-gilbertson), a quiet girl who recently arrived at the school from an orphanage and is still coping with the separation from her brother, Bertie. She stays behind at the college under the supervision of Miss Lumley and the strict headmistress Mrs. Appleyard (/actor/natalie-dormer).

At Hanging Rock, the girls settle down to enjoy their picnic, but concerns rise among the teachers as the only two watches available have both unexpectedly stopped at exactly noon, creating an eerie sense of unease. Miranda, Marion, Irma, and Edith ask for permission to explore the area further. As they walk toward the rock, they are observed by Michael Fitzhubert (/actor/harrison-gilbertson), a young Englishman, and his Australian friend Albert Crundall (/actor/jonny-pasvolsky).

The girls begin climbing the rock, and under an inexplicable, almost hypnotic influence, they fall into a deep sleep. When they wake, Miranda, Marion, and Irma seem to be in a trance and drift into a crevice of Hanging Rock. Edith, distressed and frightened, watches them go before she screams and runs back down alone. This strange event sparks a series of alarming disappearances. The remaining students and teachers, exhausted and confused, return to the college hours later, but Miss McCraw, Miranda, Marion, and Irma are nowhere to be found.

A search is organized, but it yields no results. Mrs. Appleyard reports that Miss McCraw has also vanished. During the investigation, Edith provides a fragmented account of her observations, describing a strange red cloud and Miss McCraw running toward the rock without her skirt. Nightmares haunted by the disappearances torment Michael, prompting him to return and search more thoroughly with Albert’s help.

The following day, Michael finds Irma, who is unconscious in a crevice, barefoot and without her corset or stockings. As he stumbles out and collapses, Albert finds him and the police are summoned. While being carried away, Michael secretly hands Albert a torn piece of Irma’s dress. Later, Albert locates Irma herself, who has no memory of what happened and cannot explain the disappearance of the others.

The events shake the community, leading to scandals and wild speculation involving potential motives like sexual misconduct, rape, and murder. The incident profoundly affects Miranda, symbolized by the recurring motif of a white swan in Michael’s dreams. As the school’s reputation deteriorates and financial stability suffers, Mrs. Appleyard informs Sara that her guardian has not been in contact for months and her tuition remains unpaid. Consequently, she is told she cannot participate in extracurricular activities and is increasingly isolated, mourning her friend Miranda.

Later, Irma, physically recovered but with no memory of her ordeal, is set to return to Europe to reunite with her parents. During a farewell dance at the school, she is cruelly branded as culpable by her classmates, who push her to tears. After her departure, Mlle de Poitiers uncovers that Miss Lumley has been restraining Sara under the pretense of improving her posture, highlighting the ongoing suspicions and tensions.

On the night before the Easter break, Mrs. Appleyard informs Sara that her fees are unpaid and that she must leave the school, falsely claiming that her guardian came to pick her up. Meanwhile, Albert confides in Michael about a vivid dream — in which Sara visits him and says goodbye, indicating she has “come a long way to see ya, and now I must go.” Later, the tragic truth unfolds: Sara’s body is found, having fallen from a height at the school building and crashed into an adjoining greenhouse. The gardener quickly reports this to Mrs. Appleyard, who is found sitting calmly in her office wearing funeral attire.

The story culminates with the haunting mystery of the disappearance of Miranda, Marion, and Miss McCraw, which remains unsolved and continues to cast a long shadow over the community. The narrative emphasizes the inexplicable, otherworldly nature of what transpired at Hanging Rock, leaving many questions unanswered and forever shrouded in mystery.
