After the passing of her beloved husband following a prolonged illness, Jessica “Jess” Drummond finds herself navigating a period of grief and transition. She is comforted by Frank Everett, the lawyer who was the executor of her husband’s estate and a close family friend for many years. Over time, Frank begins to show romantic interest in her, complicating her emotions during this challenging time.

Jess is a mother to two boys, Keith, who is 14, and Kim, aged 12. She endeavors to reconnect with her friends, but soon realizes that many of their conversations and memories revolve too much around her late husband, making it difficult for her to find solace or a sense of normalcy. During this period, she encounters an old friend, George Brent as Major Scott Landis, who unexpectedly forces himself upon her. Jess quickly rejects his inappropriate advances, asserting her independence and boundaries.

Seeking refuge and distraction, Jess turns to her close friend Ginna Abbott and joins her and Ginna’s husband, Cary Abbott, on a vacation to Lake Tahoe. During this trip, Jess experiences a moment of vulnerability when she gets separated from her ski equipment and finds herself lost in the snowy wilderness. It is Major Scott Landis who helps her find her way back to the Abbotts’ cozy lodge. Though they quickly develop a rapport, Jess resists any romantic feelings and firmly tells Scott to leave her alone when he shows interest in her.

Back in her hometown of Lake Forest, Jess learns that Scott has been spotted at a nightclub, fueling gossip among her circle of friends. Driven to clear her name and understand Scott’s intentions, she visits the club herself and discovers that he is stationed in Chicago. Unknown to her, Scott is awaiting military orders to be deployed overseas, a fact he chooses to withhold initially.

The rumors and gossip cause tension, especially with Riette Van Orman, George’s wife, who disapproves of Jess’s modern outlook and her interactions with Scott. Jess’s mother, Mary Kimball, confronts Scott on Christmas Eve, revealing the community’s suspicion and concern. Despite the surrounding gossip, Jess maintains that her relationship with Scott is purely platonic, even as her feelings for him deepen, initially driven by a desire to resist the gossip mill.

Eventually, Jess confesses her love for Scott, who responds by explaining that he must leave for New York the next day for his next overseas mission. Desperate to be with Scott, she rushes to the train station to meet him before his departure. However, after informing him that she cannot go to New York with him because her children are too young to comprehend her choices, she is faced with a poignant decision. Scott urges her to wait for his return, promising they will be together someday, but ultimately, he departs on the train, leaving Jess to ponder the future and her newfound feelings amidst the complexities of love, loss, and hope.
