Murder Is My Business 1946

Arnold Ramsey is a man with two adult children, Dorothy and Ernest, who harbor strong feelings of resentment toward his second wife, Eleanor. Despite [Eleanor]‘s financial stability and her own wealth, she refuses to allocate her money toward supporting the luxurious lifestyles that her stepchildren desire. This tension creates a tense family environment, where relationships are fraught with hostility and underlying conflict.

The story takes a turn when [Eleanor] seeks assistance from private detective Mike Shayne. She hires him to investigate a series of threatening letters she has been receiving, hinting at dangers lurking around her. As the narrative unfolds through flashbacks, viewers get a detailed view of her domestic situation, revealing the complexities and underlying issues that surround her.

During a meeting with Shayne, [Arnold Ramsey] approaches him with a troubling proposal. Insultingly implying that Shayne operates in shady circles, Ramsey asks if he can arrange a staged jewelry burglary to claim insurance on an empty jewelry case in his wife’s bedroom. Ramsey’s plan involves orchestrating a false break-in where an actor would pretend to rob the jewelry to collect a payout of $1000. Shayne, cautious and wary, indicates he needs time to think over this dubious scheme.

Later, at his office, Shayne confides in his secretary, Phyllis, expressing his frustration over the situation. Unbeknownst to him, his old friend and former criminal, Joe Darnell, along with his wife, Dora, are present nearby, overhearing the conversation. Darnell’s wife is pregnant, and Darnell himself is desperate for $1000. Anxiously, he volunteers to play the part of the burglar, believing it could help him solve his financial problems. Shayne advises him against such dishonesty, offering him a $50 check as a good-faith gesture.

However, Darnell takes matters into his own hands and later goes to the Ramsey residence, claiming Shayne hired him, and gains entry. This leads to a grim turn of events when [Arnold Ramsey] murders his wife [Eleanor] while she sleeps, perhaps out of fear or rage. When Darnell unexpectedly breaks into the bedroom and finds her dead, he tries desperately to revive her, which provides Ramsey with the perfect cover to shoot and kill Darnell, claiming he caught him in the act of murder. The police, convinced by Ramsey’s story, close the case, believing it to be a straightforward act of self-defense.

The plot thickens when Carl Meldrum, an ex-con who is secretly dating Dorothy, witnesses the actual murder. As a con man, Meldrum begins blackmailing Ramsey, knowing the truth. Ramsey, desperate to silence him, attempts to frame Buell Renslow, Eleanor’s brother, who was also present during the night and at odds with her over money. Throughout the investigation, [Mike Shayne] keeps his suspicions about Ramsey alive. As the story reaches its climax, Shayne gathers sufficient evidence to definitively prove who is innocent and who is guilty, ultimately unmasking the true culprit and bringing justice to light.
