James reveals a dark past: he and Grace (who once went by the name Sarah) were victims of a corrupt legal system that failed to protect her from his abuse. To keep her quiet, James bribed the authorities and later conspired with Kevin, who had met him in prison, to lure Grace into a trap. On the day of the flight, James swapped Grace for a look‑alike, drove the Uber that was supposed to pick them up, and locked her in a hidden outhouse on his property.

When June and Grace finally reunite, James bursts in, brandishing a gun. He shoots Grace and attempts to drag June away, but Grace, bleeding heavily, summons the last of her strength and stabs James with a shard of broken glass. James collapses, his laptop—through which he has been tracking June’s devices—still open. Remembering June’s sarcastic joke about her mother’s reliance on Siri, she speaks the command out loud; Siri dials emergency services, and police arrive just in time to save Grace’s life.
