Phillipe “The Mouse” Gaston, portrayed by Matthew Broderick, is an unfortunate thief who finds himself imprisoned in the notorious dungeons of Aquila, a place infamous for its inescapability. Having been condemned to death, he miraculously escapes via the ominous prison sewers. Throughout his plight, he often engages in heartfelt conversations with God, expressing his deepest troubles and fears.

The malevolent Bishop of Aquila, played by John Wood, rules the region with an iron fist and soon sends his ruthless captain of the guard, Marquet (portrayed by Ken Hutchison), to eliminate Phillipe. As the guards close in on him, a mysterious knight clad in black, Etienne Navarre (brought to life by Rutger Hauer), intervenes at a critical moment, rescuing Phillipe from certain death. In a shocking turn, when a guard recognizes Navarre, Marquet kills the guard to maintain their secrecy. Navarre skillfully battles the guards and takes Phillipe under his wing.

With motives darkly intertwined, Navarre seeks Phillipe’s assistance to infiltrate Aquila once more. He harbors a strong desire to confront the Bishop, but Phillipe, frightened of returning to a death sentence, is in no mood to help. However, the pressure escalates when Navarre menacingly warns Phillipe that his life hinges on compliance.

The plot thickens as a beautiful woman, Isabeau (played by Michelle Pfeiffer), unexpectedly enters the scene, sharing refuge with Phillipe in a barn. Their sanctuary is soon invaded by a hostile peasant, but they are miraculously saved by a large black wolf. As night descends, Navarre and his hawk reappear, only to find themselves once again intertwined with Phillipe’s fate.

Phillipe is ultimately captured by Marquet’s soldiers, who view him as a means to reach Navarre. A fierce confrontation ensues where both Navarre and his hawk sustain injuries from crossbow bolts. In a desperate bid to save the hawk, Phillipe rushes him to a nearby castle where he encounters an old monk named Imperius (portrayed by Leo McKern) who reveals the heart-wrenching backstory behind Navarre and Isabeau’s curse. Isabeau, once in love with Navarre, has been enchanted by the jealous Bishop to become a hawk by day, while Navarre transforms into a wolf by night. The curse can only be undone if they confront the Bishop at the same time in human forms, and according to Imperius, this rare chance may occur during an impending solar eclipse.

As the narrative unfolds, guards from Aquila launch an attack on Imperius’ secure hideaway, leaving Phillipe and Isabeau stranded on a tower roof during dawn. In a desperate struggle, Isabeau nearly plummets but transforms into a hawk to escape, while Navarre reclaims his human form and successfully dispatches a guard.

Imperius insists on the need to unite Navarre and Isabeau, but Navarre, consumed with distrust, devises his own plan. Meanwhile, the Bishop, paranoid of the wolf stalking the countryside, enlists the help of Cezar (played by Alfred Molina) to hunt down Navarre. In a tumultuous encounter, Cezar’s quest leads to tragic consequences as he falls victim to one of his own traps.

Determined to break the curse, Phillipe convinces Isabeau to rise against the Bishop. The trio of Phillipe, Isabeau, and Imperius assembles to enact their plan. However, challenges arise, including moments of physical peril and emotional turmoil. After a series of harrowing events, including Phillipe’s injury from Navarre’s wolf form during a rescue attempt, they decide to present Navarre as a gift to the Bishop in hopes of disrupting his malevolent grip.

As the moment of the solar eclipse approaches, tension mounts. Phillipe undertakes a dangerous mission to infiltrate the cathedral’s sewers and unlock the doors, allowing Navarre to confront the Bishop. Rife with uncertainty, Navarre instructs Imperius to end Isabeau’s life should he fail to return in time. As the eclipse unfolds, a desperate battle ensues in the cathedral, culminating in a poignant confrontation. The curse’s ultimate challenge strikes—a pivotal moment that hangs in balance as Isabeau emerges in her human form at last.

In a dramatic climax, the Bishop sees his plans unraveling. Unable to contain his rage, Navarre retaliates by impaling the Bishop, ultimately uniting him with Isabeau at long last. This emotional reunion is met with approval from Phillipe and Imperius, marking the end of their arduous journey and the beginning of their newfound freedom.
