After years of tirelessly pursuing the infamous drug lord Cullen Crisp Sr., a determined LAPD detective named John Kimble finally brings him to justice for murder when a key informant’s tip leads to Crisp’s arrest. The case hinges on a woman known as Cindy, who witnessed Crisp gun down an informant in a mall parking lot, and Crisp’s claim that his ex-wife Rachel stole three million dollars before fleeing with their son, Cullen Crisp Jr. The answer to Crisp’s grand claim is not simple, and the investigation quickly expands into a dangerous hunt across state lines.

Kimble is paired with fellow detective Phoebe O’Hara as they are assigned to Astoria, Oregon. Their mission is to locate Rachel and offer her immunity in exchange for testifying against Crisp in court. The plan hinges on Rachel’s closest tie to Crisp—their son—so O’Hara secretly poses as a substitute teacher in a kindergarten class at Astoria Elementary School to track her down. What begins as a high-stakes sting slowly evolves into an unexpectedly human undercover operation, as Kimble and O’Hara learn to navigate a very different world from the crime scenes they’re used to.

Two central threads emerge as Kimble and O’Hara establish themselves in Astoria. Kimble, a divorced man with a 13-year-old son named Alex with whom he has lost touch after his ex-wife remarried, struggles at first but gradually adapts. O’Hara, meanwhile, is juggling a relationship with a chef while supporting Kimble’s mission from behind the scenes. The pair grow closer as they build trust with the local school staff, and Kimble becomes an actual presence in the classroom. With no formal teaching training, he relies on a blend of unorthodox methods—using a pet ferret as a class mascot, offering positive reinforcement for good behavior, and applying his police discipline to structure in the classroom. The students begin to genuinely admire him, treating him as more than just a temporary figure, while Principal Ingrid Schlowski weighs his unconventional approach and ultimately begins to appreciate the results.

Kimble’s undercover role deepens his connection to Joyce, a fellow teacher whose son Dominic is one of Kimble’s pupils. Dominic looks up to Kimble, and Joyce reveals pieces of her own personal history as she and Kimble navigate the delicate balance between professional duty and developing feelings. Back in California, the investigation surrounding Crisp buckles under tragedy. Cindy dies from tainted cocaine supplied by Crisp’s mother and partner Eleanor, erasing the sole witness who might have kept Crisp tied to the case. With no solid evidence and no witness, Crisp is released and travels to Astoria with Eleanor, intent on finding his son. When Kimble learns of this development, he confronts Rachel with an offer of protection if she agrees to cooperate, but his naïve assumption that she will be grateful is shattered when she accuses him of manipulating the truth.

The tension peaks when Crisp arrives at the school and orchestrates a library fire as a distraction to abduct his son. He uses his child as a human shield in a volatile showdown with Kimble. The risk turns deadly when Dominic, wearing a sweater that hides a ferret’s hiding place, is instrumental in a swift turn of events: the ferret bites Crisp in the neck, buying time for Dominic to escape. In retaliation, Crisp shoots Kimble in the leg, prompting Kimble to return fire and kill Crisp with three decisive shots to the chest.

The chaos doesn’t end there. Eleanor crashes into the school with a car, seeking her own grandson and leaving O’Hara wounded. She shoots Kimble in the shoulder and demands to know Dominic’s whereabouts. In a climactic intervention, O’Hara intervenes, striking Eleanor unconscious with a baseball bat, and Eleanor is taken into custody. Kimble, left unconscious from his injuries, is hospitalized along with O’Hara, and both begin the long process of recovery.

In the aftermath, O’Hara returns to the LAPD and Kimble chooses to resign, deciding to stay in Astoria as a full-time kindergarten teacher. Joyce joins him, and the two share a kiss as the school community—and the audience—looks on with a sense of hopeful triumph.
