Somewhere in the Soviet Union, a massive military exercise is brewing, pitting two sprawling army groups against each other—Northern and Southern. As the maneuvers begin, the commander of the Southern airborne regiment orders three reconnaissance groups to be dropped far behind the Northern lines. Their mission is to locate and capture the Hidden Command Center (HCO) and to plant a radio beacon that will guide the airborne troops to the target. The plan is precise, but the reality of war is unpredictable: two of the three groups are quickly trapped by the Northern counter-reconnaissance units, leaving only one group in play. This surviving unit is led by Lt. Tarasov Boris Galkin, who manages to dodge every trap and push forward toward the objective.

Meanwhile, a separate thread of danger unfolds as a gang of criminals escapes from a nearby prison. They grab firearms, injure the local store manager, and gun down her driver while making off with the cash for the day. In a risky move, Lt. Tarasov uses his military radio to report the crime to local police, fully aware that this transmission could betray the position of his own group to the pursuing enemy. The regiment presses on toward its mission, but the wounded and frightened are left in capable hands as the group’s medic, Praporshchik Volentir Mihai Volontir, stays behind to tend to an injured woman. As police and investigators arrive on the scene, Volentir makes a swift dash to the hut of a forest warden to borrow a motorcycle and catch up with the others, hoping to minimize the distance between his unit and the evolving crisis.

The forest warden’s home becomes a new flashpoint when the criminals seize the wardens and their household. Volentir’s martial arts training, a skill drilled into every paratrooper, helps him neutralize the criminals and secure the hostages, saving his relatives and buying the group crucial time. Back in the field, the pursuit tightens as Northern Major Morozhkyn [Anatoliy Kuznetsov] intercepts Tarasov’s police transmission. His troops tighten around the forest where Tarasov’s group has been spotted, yet the paratroopers manage to slip away by daring a route through a swamp that locals deem nearly impassable.

Rejoining Volentir, the team presses toward the original target, only to discover a decoy—a fake underground facility designed to mislead the pursuers. The sense of defeat sets in for the younger commander, Tarasov, who feels the mission has failed and his unit has been outmaneuvered. But Volentir remains the steady hand, boosting Tarasov’s confidence and urging him to investigate a nearby location where Northern guards are seen communicating with their command over a wired line. Tarasov follows the clue, while Volentir stays behind at the decoy bunker to create a distraction, delaying the opposing force and buying precious time for the others.

With only fifteen minutes left before the planes carrying the main paratoopers are due to deploy, the high command grows anxious, uncertain of the enemy’s exact location. A riskier plan B looms: drop at the original zone and search for the HCO on the ground. Yet the telephone line alignment reveals the truth—the actual command center is nearby. Tarasov’s group traces the wire to the real location and sets up a radio beacon to guide the main force home.

A coordinated airdrop follows, and Tarasov leads the charge to seize the Hidden Command Center. The climactic confrontation culminates in a tense showdown with the Northern commander as Tarasov asserts control over the situation and delivers the closing declaration. The mission is accomplished, the HCO is secured, and Tarasov’s leadership—alongside the steadfast support of Volentir—has steered the operation to a successful end.
