His three younger sisters depend on him, and the pressure to restore the family’s standing hangs over every decision. The atmosphere is one of quiet desperation, a mix of modest homes and the lingering echo of grander days, setting a tone that balances humility with the fierce drive to reclaim honor.

Across the street lives a formidable landlord, Itichen, whose wealth is matched only by his rigid, miserly ways. His daughter, Alice, drifts through a world of serialized novels, dreaming of a romance that feels as distant as the page‑turning stories she devours. Their household is a microcosm of strict tradition and unyielding expectations, a backdrop that amplifies the stakes when marriage becomes the bridge between two very different worlds.

Enter Chandi, the well‑meaning yet duplicitous broker whose matchmaking promises a lifeline for George’s family. He weaves a tale of prosperity, presenting George as a fitting match for Alice despite the hidden financial strain. The arrangement, built on illusion, thrusts George into an unfamiliar domain where he must navigate the intricacies of a new household that watches his every move, demanding obedience and imposing conditions that chip away at his dignity.
