Escape plan forms in Monrovia

Philip Abubakar, a local LDS branch leader, and six missionaries are trapped by the First Liberian Civil War. They decide to escape Monrovia and travel to the northern border with Sierra Leone so they can continue preaching without fear of being killed. The decision marks the beginning of a dangerous journey away from the city they call home.

Gaye targeted as Krahn by INPFL

Elder Gaye is Krahn, a tribe targeted for execution by rebels. Ansa, the local rebel leader, orders killings on sight against Krahn members, blaming them for the war and for personal losses. Momulu, another rebel who is part of the LDS community, manages to persuade Ansa to spare Gaye's life.

Released to join Abubakar's group

After being detained by rebels, the missionaries are released to join Abubakar and the other missionaries on the journey toward the border. They prepare to escape together, aware that any misstep could be fatal. The group moves with the shared hope of reaching safety.

Escape in the red sedan

The seven escapees crowd into an old, red five-seat sedan driven by Abubakar, with the biblical Mark 9:24 painted on the back. The car becomes their makeshift ark as they push toward the border despite shelling and checkpoints. The sense of urgency is matched by their fragile vehicle and uncertain future.

Ansa tracks toward the border

Ansa, furious over the missing missionaries, tracks the car toward the border to prevent Elder Gaye from slipping out of the country. His pursuit adds constant threat and tension to the escape. The rebels' pursuit contrasts with the missionaries' resolve to reach safety.

Checkpoint barter begins

At each checkpoint along the way, the escapees gradually trade their belongings to pass through. They sacrifice possessions, hoping to buy passage and avoid a halt that could cost them their lives. The exchanges reveal the desperation of their mission and the value of faith over material goods.

Gas runs out near a small town

The car finally runs out of gas as they reach a small town with a petrol pump but no money left. They trade what little remains for liters of petrol to keep moving toward the border. The lack of funds becomes a new obstacle in their perilous journey.

Border bridge closed; no papers

They arrive at the border only to find the bridge closed and none of the missionaries with ID papers or passports. The lack of official documents blocks the obvious route to Sierra Leone. The group clings to hope despite the bureaucratic barrier.

Hope of crossing via ferry

After praying for a way across, they hear a ferry carrier approaching, suggesting a possible chance to cross. They hurry to board, clinging to their faith and the last glimmer of opportunity. The moment underscores their fragile optimism.

Interception at the ferry

Just as they are about to board, Ansa and Momulu confront them, threatening execution and forcing the Christians to comply with Ansa's demands. Momulu briefly compels them to follow Ansa's orders before stepping away. The tension peaks as danger and mercy collide.

Soldiers arrive; allegiance shifts

Momulu returns with armed soldiers who reveal their Krahn identity and demand that Ansa release the missionaries. Faced with the soldiers' authority and his own people, Ansa relents, and Momulu abandons Ansa to side with the missionaries. The rescue marks a turning point in the escape.

Crossing into Sierra Leone

With the soldiers' support, the missionaries cross the border into Sierra Leone and move toward safety. The improvised alliance avoids a deadly confrontation and creates a new sense of momentum for their journey.

Reunion with President Cunningham in Freetown

In Freetown they are reunited with LDS mission president President Cunningham, who oversees their religious duties and supports their continued mission. The reunion marks a return to stability and a renewed sense of purpose.
