F red, the pet cat of young siblings Sophie and Nick, has recently died. Word spreads through the street as neighbors and family members remember the cat who loved to sleep in sunlit corners and warm windows. Together with their Dad and Mum, Sophie and Nick bury Fred in the courtyard and mark his grave with a simple stone, a quiet tribute to a creature who seemed ordinary by day but carried extraordinary stories by night.

At night, [Sophie] and [Nick] awaken to a noise outside their window. They sneak downstairs and find a neighbor’s cat, Ginger, standing in the yard in a tailcoat and top hat, checking his wristwatch. The children creep out through the catflap and approach [Ginger], who speaks to them in fluent English and asks whether they knew “the deceased.” Realizing he means Fred, they explain they were Fred’s owners. [Ginger] is delighted to learn they owned “the most famous cat in the world,” which confuses them. Soon the courtyard is revealed to be teeming with cats and tomcats who have gathered for a funeral service in Fred’s honor. When the children insist Fred could not possibly have been famous because he had literally done nothing, the cats disclose the truth: by night, Fred is a renowned singer and rock star in the feline world.

[K ennett], the guinea pig of the two children, suddenly pushes himself through the catflap. In jeans and a leather jacket, he introduces himself to Sophie and Nick as Fred’s former manager. After a cat named Ruby leads a gospel choir in singing a song in Fred’s memory, the cats unveil a grand headstone over Fred’s grave with the bold inscription FAMOUS FRED, before laying flowers and wreaths. [Kenneth] gathers the children and cats to tell Fred’s story.

Fred came to Sophie and Nick as a birthday present for the mother of the family. By chance, he was introduced to rock and roll after accidentally turning on a vinyl player and speakers in the living room, and he secretly practiced singing in the garden shed. [Kenneth], who had recently left the Royal Opera House at the time, overheard him and decided to take over Fred’s training. After being “found” by Sophie and Nick’s parents and adopted as a pet, [Kenneth] introduced himself to Fred (who initially tried to eat him) and offered to be his manager. At night, [Kenneth] made costumes for Fred and taught him to dance and perform. Soon Fred could perform in public and the crowd of feline fans grew.

When the backyards were no longer enough for Fred’s audience, the two left the family to go on a world tour, with Sophie and Nick desperately searching the streets to find their missing pets. Fred’s dissolute lifestyle, however, brought rising veterinary bills as illnesses mounted. In the end, Fred fell ill with ‘cat flu’ and died shortly after returning to the family.

In the present, Sophie and Nick are saddened that they never heard Fred sing, with [Kenneth] blaming himself for Fred’s death. [Ginger] reveals he secretly recorded Fred’s final song on tape, without [Kenneth]’s permission, and the funeral service moves to Sophie’s and Nick’s house, where the children and cats dance to Fred’s music and even empty the fridge. As dawn approaches, everyone disappears and Sophie and Nick are sent to bed by [Kenneth], who labors to clean the kitchen before retiring upstairs himself.

The next morning, Sophie and Nick’s parents are puzzled by the suddenly empty refrigerator and the missing flowers from the garden. They follow the clues to the garden, where the children present Fred’s still-decorated headstone to their astonished parents, who assume they made it themselves. Sophie nods in agreement, and an initially confused Nick chooses not to reveal the truth.

Meanwhile, [Kenneth] sits in his hutch upstairs, listing the cat lives Fred had already spent over the years. He realizes that the cat flu was only Fred’s eighth life, and since every cat has nine lives, Fred still has one life left—and he calls out for its whereabouts.

In the garden, Fred appears from behind his headstone and, with a quiet smile, slips away once more, leaving the family to wonder what truly happened in the night.
