Ernest's golf-range job and big-rig dream

Ernest works as a golf ball collector at a range in Valdosta, Georgia. He spends his days counting balls and fantasizing about driving a big rig, imagining freedom and adventure on the open road.

Ben's pitch and Ernest's enlistment

His friend Ben tells him that joining the United States Army will let him drive large vehicles and avoid actual combat. Motivated by this promise, Ernest enlists in the reserves.

Missile-vehicle heist

Ernest steals a missile vehicle carrying a Pluton missile, with Colonel Gullet strapped on to it. The audacious move places him on a dangerous course as he tries to control the weapon while Gullet pressures him.
