Arun, portrayed by Aamir Khan, is a reclusive artist who is on the verge of making a significant change in his life by moving into a rundown flat in the older part of Mumbai. He is specifically drawn to apartments that offer views of the historical site of old Mumbai. Although the kitchen in his new apartment is somewhat cramped, this place is a rare find as it features an attached bathroom, which is often not the case for older flats.

His life takes an unexpected turn when he attends an exhibition showcasing his own artwork, where he meets Shai, played by Monica Dogra. Shai is an American investment banker who has traveled to Mumbai not for vacation but for a sabbatical focused on her passion, which is photography. She mentions that she is working on a paper about the transformation of traditional occupations within small and medium enterprises and has been granted a research grant for this purpose.

Following a spilled glass of wine incident, Arun invites Shai to his flat, leading to a spontaneous one-night encounter. However, the next morning, Arun reveals his disinterest in pursuing any further relationship since he identifies as a loner and prefers solitude. This leads to an angry departure from Shai, who leaves wearing one of Arun’s shirts due to her top being stained.

As fate would have it, we learn that this flat is where Arun previously resided before securing his new place in old Mumbai due to the expiration of his lease. Shortly after their encounter, Munna, whose character is played by Prateik Babbar, a Dhobi (or washerman) with aspirations of breaking into Bollywood, arrives to deliver Arun’s laundry. Munna’s living situation is challenging, as he shares a small Chawl with his two brothers and their mother, highlighting the struggles of poverty that permeate his daily life.

Arun informs Munna of his upcoming move, asking him to continue delivering laundry at his new residence. The next day marks Arun’s transition into the new apartment and while unpacking, he stumbles upon a small container left behind by the previous tenant, containing a silver chain, a ring, and three video tapes made by Yasmin Noor, played by Kriti Malhotra. These tapes, titled Pehli Chitti, Doosri Chitti, and Aakhri Chitti, are intimate video diaries Yasmin created to connect with her brother.

Throughout her tapes, Yasmin displays happiness and shows off her apartment, which is now Arun’s new home. It becomes clear that Yasmin comes from Maliabad in UP and her narrative provides a backdrop to Arun’s own life. Arun’s artistic talents capture the attention of art dealers who decide to open a gallery in Sydney showcasing his paintings, offering him the opportunity to reconnect with his ex-wife and child living in Australia.

In the meantime, a friendship blossoms between Shai and Munna when they meet while Munna is delivering laundry to Shai’s residence. Shai treats Munna with kindness, which helps him feel valued despite his social standing. They arrange for Munna to show Shai around Mumbai as she gathers photographs for her project, and in return, she agrees to help Munna create a portfolio for his aspirations in the film industry. However, complications arise when Munna inadvertently mixes one of Arun’s shirts into Shai’s laundry.

Arun, meanwhile, becomes increasingly engrossed in Yasmin’s tapes, which reveal her life and her struggles. As the videos progress, it is apparent that Yasmin’s marriage is deteriorating, leaving her in emotional turmoil. Shai also becomes aware of Arun’s presence, capturing candid photographs of him from a construction site opposite his apartment.

In the backdrop of Munna’s struggles, which include washing clothes during the day and dealing with vermin at night, he grapples with his growing feelings for Shai yet feels unable to voice these emotions due to his class difference. As tensions mount, Arun and Shai’s plans intersect. Arun, curious about Shai, invites her over once he realizes she’s nearby, and the tension comes to a head when Munna sees them together, leading to feelings of betrayal.

The storyline deepens as Munna witnesses his brother’s tragic fate, propelling him to seek opportunities in the film industry. Arun, too, faces his crisis as he learns of Yasmin’s potential fate from the final tape, which reveals her intention to take her life amid revelations of infidelity in her marriage. Distressed by the possibility of Yasmin having ended her life in his current apartment, Arun hurriedly vacates the place, seeking solace in a new environment.

In a twist of fate, Munna catches up with Shai at a pivotal moment, grasping the necessity to remain close to their friendship despite the emotional and social barriers at play. He gives her Arun’s new address, linking their lives once more in the backdrop of Mumbai’s vivid tapestry, promising further developments in their intertwined stories as they navigate their respective aspirations and emotional struggles.
