Franta's Imprisonment

In the oppressive atmosphere of 1950 Czechoslovakia, František Sláma finds himself imprisoned due to his past as a pilot in the RAF. His imprisonment is a direct consequence of the mounting tensions of the Cold War, reflecting the harsh political landscape of the time.

Memories of 1939

As Franta sits in his cell, memories of his homeland flood his mind, particularly the events leading up to the German invasion in 1939. He reflects on the disbandment of the Czechoslovak Army, a pivotal moment in his life that ultimately forced him to flee.

Flight to the UK

Franta and his compatriot Karel Vojtíšek refuse to surrender to the looming threat of the Germans. Instead, they risk their lives by fleeing to the United Kingdom to join the RAF, demonstrating their commitment to fight for their country.

Retraining in the UK

Upon arriving in the UK, Franta and Karel are faced with a grueling retraining program. This process includes frustrating English lessons, particularly for the impatient Karel, who yearns for immediate action against the Germans.

Battle of Britain

As the Battle of Britain intensifies, the Czechoslovak airmen finally receive orders to take to the skies. Their first sortie starkly contrasts their expectations, with the tragic loss of their fellow pilot, 'Tom Tom,' highlighting the brutal realities of war.

Karel's Sortie

On a critical mission, Karel's Spitfire is shot down while engaging a Heinkel He 111 bomber. Against all odds, Karel survives the downing of his aircraft and finds refuge on a nearby farm, where he meets Susan, igniting a powerful yet complicated attraction.

Franta's Visit

The next day, Franta visits the same farm where Karel has taken refuge. He too finds himself drawn to Susan, creating a love triangle that complicates the long-standing friendship between Franta and Karel.

Harrowing Mission in France

During a dangerous mission in France, Franta and Karel’s relationship nearly fractures when Franta performs a heroic rescue. He saves Karel from being captured after another crash, reinforcing their bond in the face of adversity.

Disaster in the Skies

Tragedy strikes as Franta’s Spitfire malfunctions during a mission meant to protect American bombers. His desperate attempt to stay airborne leads to a crash in the ocean, with Karel making a brave effort to rescue him, resulting in a fatal incident.

Post-War Reality

With the war's end, Franta hopes to reconnect with Susan but discovers her with an injured husband recently returned from combat. This encounter leaves Franta heartbroken and highlights the irrevocable changes brought about by the war.

Returning Home

Franta returns to Czechoslovakia after the war, only to find that his former girlfriend has married and started a life without him. He grapples with his painful memories and the changes in his relationships as he adjusts to his new reality.
