Bringing Up Bobby 2012

Ukrainian single mother Olive Younger finds herself in a series of unexpected situations as she navigates life with her son Bobby. The journey begins when they set out to test drive a Cadillac, lovingly referring to each other as Bonnie and Clyde. During this escapade, while the car salesman Aaron Kessler busies himself with paperwork, Olive seizes the moment and drives away to Walt’s service garage in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Walt offers her $2,000 for the car, but Olive cleverly decides to keep both the car and the money.

As they settle into their new home, they indulge in a whimsical “special movie guessing game,” providing them with laughter and bonding moments. Bobby enters school, only to face the disheartening news of receiving an “F” from his teacher. In her determination to survive, Olive resorts to pretending to be pregnant, allowing her to con food from the local store. Tension arises with their neighbor John Lewis III, who confronts Olive about Bobby’s mischievous behavior, including throwing cans at passing cars and making prank calls. In an attempt to connect, John quotes Matthew 18:2-6, to which Olive casually responds with “Amen,” referencing Psalm 127:3.

To lighten her burdens, Walt takes Olive out to a fun evening at “Bowling for the Lord,” where she unexpectedly finds herself dancing with none other than Tommy Lee Jones (who is humorously noted to not be from Texas). Olive even goes to great lengths by adopting the identity of Marie Elise from France, garnering donations for children in South America. Meanwhile, mischief ensues as Bobby drinks beer and has Walt’s motorcycle towed, marking their carefree days.

However, their seemingly perfect world shatters when real estate mogul Kent Moody strikes Bobby with his Porsche while he skateboards. The doctor diagnoses a fracture in Bobby’s leg, and things take another turn when Kent’s limo driver Gerry takes Olive and Bobby home. In a desperate bid, Olive attempts to file for insurance fraud, demanding an outrageous $889,000, claiming Bobby has “brain damage.” She meets Kent’s administrative gatekeeper, Carol, and eventually finds herself in his office, where a picture of Kent’s wife Mary and son Jamie catches her attention—it’s a “sad story for another time,” she muses.

The plot thickens as two Blue Wire insurance investigators confront them; Walt pretends to be Gerald Butler, a fictional London physician. Bobby, in a quirky twist, feigns distress wearing a goat’s head mask, leading to trouble when law enforcement arrives. Lewis points out Olive and Bobby at the bowling alley, resulting in Olive’s arrest. In a surprising twist, Kent and Mary offer to legally adopt Bobby to prevent him from entering juvenile detention. The ruling falls to Judge Donald L. Deason, who decides whether Olive can reclaim her son after she proves to be a “changed woman.”

Fast forward eight months: Olive regains her freedom, and Walt drives her to Kent’s impressive Nichols Hills mansion, where curiosity sparks about past incidents—like Olive’s alleged house fires in Kansas City for insurance. Although she insists she’s “done,” the conversation lingers. At the mansion, Bobby is playing with Kent and Mary, and Kent expresses his wish for regular visitation. Olive then stays with Walt and his girlfriend Darlene in a CRI&P caboose and begins cleaning work. Unfortunately, Olive can’t withstand her co-worker’s incessant and tone-deaf whistling.

Mary embarks on a mission to teach Bobby dance, thrusting him into a private school where he learns new skills like baseball, piano, and chess, though he faces distractions from his dropout friend Earl, who brings trouble to their door with suggestions of substances. In search of quick money, Walt and Darlene start rolling joints to sell, igniting Olive’s frustration, prompting her to move out.

Determined to provide for Bobby on her own, Olive finds work twirling a sign at Uncle Sam’s Muffler Shop, but the gossip among Bobby’s classmates about his “jailbird” mom weighs heavily on her. In a moment of vulnerability, Mary extends an olive branch, persuading Kent to offer Olive their guest house. Bobby, wanting to support his mother, steals one of Mary’s dresses, but Olive catches him in the act, warning him it could lead to trouble.

Walt’s plans stir more chaos as Earl gets Bobby involved in a prank calling incident with the police, causing a massive response from law enforcement over a false school shooting. When Mary discovers the stolen dress in Olive’s purse, tensions rise—leading to Olive receiving a stern warning from Detective Winters about the severity of the charges. She asks Olive for insight into her past, urging her to reflect on her choices and their impact on Bobby’s future.

Overhearing an argument between Kent and Mary about the family’s influence on Bobby, Olive makes a heartfelt decision, narrating a story to Bobby about going to school “to learn new things.” She meets up with Walt, who shares a dubious plan to break into Kent’s office, but Olive has a change of heart and tips off Detective Winters.

In a pivotal moment, Olive tells Winters about her fears, leading to a heartfelt affirmation from the detective: “You did the right thing. You stay on this path, and you stand a good chance of getting Bobby back.” Thankful for this newfound clarity, Olive walks away, ready to confront her future with hope.
