Blood & Gold 2023

In the spring of 1945, as the Allied forces press into Nazi Germany, the narrative centers around Heinrich, portrayed by Robert Maaser, a decorated veteran of the Wehrmacht. Captured after attempting to desert, he faces execution at the hands of the Waffen-SS, commanded by the zealous Lieutenant Colonel Von Starnfeld, played by Alexander Scheer. Having witnessed the atrocities committed by the Axis powers, Heinrich is resolute in his belief that he is done with the war. After his hanging, Heinrich is fortuitously saved by Elsa, brilliantly depicted by Marie Hacke, who takes him to her farmhouse where she lives with her brother Paule (Simon Rupp).

Elsa’s motivations are clear; her disdain for the Nazis drives her to assist Heinrich, who confides in her about his desperate desire to return to his daughter, a sole survivor of an air raid that claimed his wife’s life. Meanwhile, in the nearby village of Sonnenberg, SS forces begin a frantic search for hidden treasures belonging to a family of Hebrews, specifically the Lowensteins. Robert Schlick, the town mayor, portrayed by Simson Bubbel, provides little more than subpar hospitality to the SS as they scavenge for resources.

As the Allies tighten their grip and the SS, led by Dorfler (Florian Schmidtke), find themselves in dire straits, the pursuit of gold becomes increasingly desperate. The narrative escalates when Dorfler’s squad, on a looting expedition, corners Heinrich in Elsa’s attic. A tense confrontation ensues, resulting in the SS soldiers being vanquished, though Dorfler manages to escape. Heinrich, Elsa, and Paule flee into the forest, but their sanctuary is shattered when Paule is taken by the remaining SS after he returns home for his beloved dairy cow.

The brutality continues as Dorfler subjects Paule to torment in front of the villagers and ultimately drags him to the church steeple where a gruesome execution appears imminent. Just as hope wanes, Paule takes a bold stand, but chaos unfolds as he too meets a tragic end at the hands of Starnfeld. A fierce battle erupts, with Heinrich severely injured yet determined to survive, finding refuge at a local priest’s residence.

While the SS remain oblivious to the treasure’s actual location—believed to be 31 bars of gold hidden beneath the Lowensteins’ home—the priest discloses their harrowing backstory, illuminating a tale of a wealthy family forced to battle against the oppressive fascism of their homeland. The plot thickens as the priest confides that he has hidden the gold in the church, believing it to be the key to their freedom.

In a turn of events, the mayor plans to unveil the gold’s secret but is silenced by Sonja, played by Jördis Triebel, a local with loyalty to Nazi ideology. As tensions build, Starnfeld’s interest in Elsa pushes her to play a perilous game of survival. When the opportunity arises, she cleverly vanquishes him, allowing her to make a daring escape.

Meanwhile, a desperate plan unfolds as Heinrich strategically attempts to barter for Elsa’s freedom with the promised gold. However, when Dorfler learns of Starnfeld’s demise, he seizes command and confronts Heinrich. In a climactic struggle, Elsa, galvanized by Heinrich’s fierce determination, picks up arms alongside Irmgard, a girlfriend of the priest, leading a valiant charge against the oppressors.

As chaos reigns, betrayal surfaces when Sonja undermines Elsa’s efforts in the heat of battle, ultimately leading to a bloody face-off. With the last of the SS forces subdued, Heinrich and Elsa finally seize the chance to escape. Yet, in a cruel twist of fate, Sonja makes off with the gold only to meet her demise when American forces thwart her escape.

In a heartwarming conclusion, Heinrich and Elsa’s tale comes full circle as they arrive in Hagen, culminating in an emotional reunion between Heinrich and his long-lost daughter, representing a fragile yet hopeful new beginning amidst the ravages of war.
