Bonolata Jaya Ahsan is the focal figure of a village tale about life, death, and a secret that binds generations. In her mortal days she uncovers the dark practice of child sacrifice conducted by Kalothakur Shantilal Mukherjee, a priest who has long shielded this truth from the community. Before she can expose what she knows, Bonolata is murdered to keep the grisly secret safe, a tragedy that kicks off the haunting journey through the afterlife.

After the fateful night, Bonolata awakens not as a mortal but as a ghost, first dreaming of floating like a light feather and then discovering she is bound to the world of the dead. She remains engulfed by sadness and loneliness until a curious child enters her orbit, a boy named Shurjo Bishantak Mukherjee who arrives in the village after years of urban bustle, driven by somnambulism and a longing for change. On their very first encounter, the boundaries between living and unseen begin to blur: they can see, feel, and even touch one another in ways that defy ordinary rules, a peculiar connection that fuels both trust and suspicion.

Noru Thakur Kalyan Chatterjee, Kalothakur’s devoted disciple, enters the narrative when he seeks out Shilalipi Sudipta Chakraborty, the mother of Shurjo. He shares tales of Bonolata’s apparition and the strange chain of events that followed her death, bearing marks of a past accident that left his face scarred. He warns Shilalipi that Bonolata’s path to enlightenment may require a terrible price—that she could achieve release only by killing a descendant of Kalothakur—and now she appears to hunt their son. From a hidden vantage, Shurjo overhears this ominous warning, adding a layer of peril to his budding alliance with Bonolata.

As the mystery deepens, Shurjo discovers an underground room described by Makhon Ritwick Chakraborty, a village thief who holds the key to the village’s long-buried answers. Makhon reveals that his ancestor once copied strange writings into a language no one could decipher, and in the room’s shadows lies a different kind of code. The room’s walls are etched with shadows created by a wire-shaped three-dimensional object placed at its center. When Shurjo turns the object so the shadows align with letters, the voices of children fill the air and sing the notes of sargam. The cryptic symbols gradually reveal themselves to be musical notes—an ancient song that can coax sleeping ghosts toward peace.

The plot thickens as Shurjo, guided by these revelations, begins decoding the song while his fever eases and his resilience grows. He leaves the underground chamber only to fall ill again, and Makhon finds him and sets him gently on the porch as the family seeks medical help. While the doctor tends to him, Makhon slips from beneath the bed and into the quiet corners of the household, ready to listen as Shurjo recounts every discovery he has made.

That night, Bonolata materializes in Shurjo’s room, yet her presence is not one of menace but restraint. Instead of harming the boy, she steps back and closes the door, turning her attention toward Shurjo’s mother. The story then swings into a dream sequence where Shurjo envisions Bonolata on a boat while he plays the violin; the ethereal figure drifts higher into the sky, as if carried by the very notes he has begun to understand. With the song completed, Shurjo wakes with the sense that his mother’s sleepwalking holds a crucial clue, and he races to help her, guided by the dream’s vision.

Soon after, Shurjo returns to the place where his first encounter with Bonolata occurred and spends a quiet moment mourning the specter he has come to know. The family prepares to return to Kolkata, leaving behind the village that housed these spirits and secrets. Makhon bids him farewell and offers a final gift—an old book from his ancestor, a thief’s token passed to the son of a wealthy man. On the long journey home, a golden feather drops into Shurjo’s hand, a symbolic sign that Bonolata has finally become Bhootpori, free at last from earthly ties and ready to ascend.
