In 1940, just after the fall of France, the fictitious Channel Island of Armorel is occupied by a small German garrison under the benign command of Captain Weiss, a role portrayed on screen by George Coulouris. The Suzerain, the hereditary ruler, is away with the British Army, leaving the Provost in charge.

Back in London, the Ministry of Agriculture learns that Venus, a prize pedigree pregnant cow, was left behind during the evacuation. David Niven plays Major Morland, who is assigned to lead the rescue mission and bring Venus home. The Suzerain’s sister, Nicola Fallaize, is in Wales serving as an Auxiliary Territorial Service cook. Nicola, Glynis Johns, is soon posted to the War Office to report on the island and help coordinate the plan. Morland quickly obtains permission to bring Venus along, because the cow is practically part of the family.

They are joined by radio operator Sergeant Forbes and naval officer “Trawler” Langley, who knows the local waters; the trio is transported to Armorel by submarine. On arrival, they contact the Provost and learn that Weiss, a cattle breeder in civilian life, is planning to ship the cow to Germany. To complicate matters, Nicola persuades her pacifist cousin and painter Lionel Fallaize, Kenneth More, to disguise another cow as Venus to swap the real animal.

The deception is discovered by Weiss, and a tense chase ensues. The group is captured by Sgt. Vogel, but they manage to overpower him after Venus gives birth to a calf. They then spirit the cow and her calf onto a Royal Navy Motor Torpedo Boat, making their way back to Britain and, in the process, sinking a pursuing German E-boat.
