What Is Operation Amsterdam About?

The premise of Operation Amsterdam in 330 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.

In the spring of 1940, the storm clouds of war sweep across the low‑lying landscape of the Netherlands. German forces surge forward, turning familiar canals and cobblestone streets into a tense frontier where ordinary lives are suddenly measured in seconds. Amid the hurried evacuations and whispered rumors, the city of Amsterdam flickers between its historic elegance and the looming shadow of occupation, creating a world where every decision feels urgent and every ally is precious.

Major Dillon, a disciplined British intelligence officer, is dispatched on a covert assignment that balances bureaucratic duty with the raw immediacy of a collapsing front. To navigate the intricate Dutch diamond trade, he partners with two seasoned merchants: Jan Smit and Walter Keyser, whose expertise in the glittering industry is matched only by their deep-rooted connections to the country they call home. Their uneasy alliance is forged by necessity, each aware that their personal stakes—honor, survival, and a stubborn hope for the future—are intertwined with the broader war effort.

The quartet’s dynamic shifts the moment they encounter Anna, a young woman haunted by personal loss yet fiercely committed to the nascent Dutch security forces. Her quiet resolve and lingering grief lend a poignant humanity to the mission, while her knowledge of local networks hints at the hidden veins of resistance pulsing beneath the city’s surface. Together, they must persuade the sprawling community of diamond merchants to move their valuable stock across borders, a task complicated by the tightening grip of the invading army.

Against a backdrop of hurried trains, clattering boots, and the constant hum of distant aircraft, the film captures the fragile balance between duty and desperation. The tone is one of tense camaraderie, where humor flickers in brief exchanges and the ever‑present danger lends each interaction a sharpened edge. In this precarious moment, the characters navigate trust, loyalty, and the weight of history, leaving the audience eager to see how their quiet bravery might reshape the course of an empire on the brink.

Spoilers ahead

In May 1940, as the German invasion of the Netherlands intensifies, the British government mounts a risky operation to secure stocks of industrial diamonds before the invaders reach them. On a mission aboard HMS Walpole, two Dutch diamond experts, Jan Smit, Peter Finch, and Walter Keyser, Alexander Knox, join forces with Major Dillon, Tony Britton, a British Army Intelligence officer. They are dropped by sea off the Dutch coast and barely escape a German air raid and the attention of a wary Dutch policeman.

To keep moving, they need a car and end up with a ride from Anna, Eva Bartok, who is attempting suicide after blaming herself for the deaths of her Jewish fiancé’s parents. She reveals she is part of the Dutch security forces and agrees to assist the mission.

The quartet travels to Amsterdam where they reconnect with Jan’s father, Johan, Malcolm Keen at his diamond business house. Johan promises to persuade other dealers to bring diamonds for transport to Britain later that day. But a major hurdle looms: much of the loot is locked in a time-locked bank vault that cannot be opened for 24 hours because Whit Monday is a holiday. Undeterred, they recruit Dillon’s contacts, a Dutch resistance group, to aid in breaking into the vault.

Meanwhile, Fifth Columnist elements within the Dutch army stage an assault on the bank. The resistance fights back, and the group manages to breach the vault and recover the diamonds. Jan Smit, in a decisive moment, shoots the leader of the fifth columnists, a Dutch army lieutenant, effectively turning the tide of the confrontation.

With the diamonds recovered, the team and the resistance fighters guard against continued attacks as they make a perilous escape. They race back toward the coast, evading a German air strike along the route, only to discover their boatmaster has been killed. A tugboat is seized to ferry them back to the waiting destroyer, closing the loop on a treacherous mission.

In the end, Anna elects to stay in the Netherlands, choosing to continue her work with the nascent resistance movement, leaving the others to carry the diamonds to Britain.
