When the leaders convene to face the crisis, the mysterious piper emerges and demonstrates a haunting power: with the cadence of his music, he can lure the vermin to their deaths. The town, hungry for relief and anchored by a history of indulgence, offers him a fortune—1000 gold coins—if he can rid them of the rats. The piper plays once more, and as his tune echoes through the streets, the citizens transform into rats and follow his tune to the tower’s edge, leaping to the same fate that befell the vermin earlier. The last to vanish is the transformed jeweler, his guilt fully manifest in a final, inexorable fall.

Only one figure remains: an old fisherman who had watched the city from a distance. As the piper’s presence dissolves, his cloak becomes a hollow shell and then vanishes into the wind. The fisherman approaches the empty streets and finds the sole survivor—the baby who remains uncorrupted.
