In Afghanistan, a group of mercenaries comprising Tre, Rob, Luke, and Hyde find themselves entangled with a war profiteer who owes them a substantial sum of money. Just before they proceed to eliminate him, he reveals that the debt has been wired to a bank located in Chesterford, Massachusetts. As the situation unfolds, Interpol Agent Rossi is reassigned from an operation in Kabul to investigate these rogue mercenaries.

Back in Chesterford, a quiet and reserved high school student, Kenny Ralston, faces suspension after defending himself against a bully. The school’s vice principal informs Kenny’s mother, Shawnee Ralston, a dedicated emergency department nurse, that he must participate in a police ride-along or face expulsion. Kenny is paired with Officer Mike Chandler, played by Nicolas Cage, and his son-in-law Officer Steve MacAvoy, portrayed by Dwayne Cameron. Mike, a widower struggling to connect with his daughter Lisa—who is unexpectedly pregnant—finds himself caught between personal issues and professional duties. Initially, the relationship between Kenny and the officers is strained, particularly when Kenny records an altercation involving the police, which frustrates Mike due to his belief that such actions hinder their work.

Meanwhile, the mercenaries are plotting to execute a bank heist in Chesterford to seize the wired sum of $1.3 million. To create a diversion, Hyde discreetly plants an IED in a local diner. As the robbery unfolds, hostages are taken, injecting a sense of urgency and danger into the already tense situation.

During a coffee break, Mike notices an SUV parked suspiciously outside the bank while Tre and Hyde detonate the IED, leading to the diner’s destruction. The Chesterford Police Department scrambles, with all available units, under Captain Horst’s command, responding to the explosion. As Shawnee’s hospital gears up to receive casualties, Agent Rossi is ordered to lend his assistance to the Chesterford PD. Despite the chaos, Mike grows fond of Kenny and decides to stay by his side, much to Steve’s discontent.

The situation escalates dramatically when Hyde opens fire on their cruiser, prompting a high-stakes shootout that leaves Kenny trying to capture every moment on video. As Mike tends to a wounded Steve, the brutal conflict results in several hostages being shot, including Officer Jacobs, adding pressure to the ongoing crisis. In a desperate moment, Steve, fearing for his life, asks Kenny to record a message for Lisa, adding an emotional weight to the proceedings.

At the hospital, Shawnee and the EMTs are inundated with casualties from both the diner explosion and the bank robbery, while Lisa learns of Mike’s brave efforts to find Kenny. Over time, the bank is enveloped by a massive police presence, including SWAT teams and the Massachusetts State Police. An attempt to rescue the hostages leads to catastrophic events, including Horst sacrificing himself to save others.

As the SWAT team conducts their storming operation, they encounter fierce resistance from the robbers. Amidst the chaos, Kenny bravely brandishes a fallen officer’s weapon as Tre seeks to finish Mike off. In a critical moment, both Rossi and Kenny confront Tre, leading to a showdown that results in Tre’s defeat. Afterward, the surviving officers are extracted from the perilous situation, where they are eventually reunited with their families.

Fast forward one year, Mike returns to a warm birthday celebration attended by his loved ones, including Steve, Lisa, Kenny, and even a new granddaughter.
