Yôko Tsukasa: Movies & Box Office

Yōko Tsukasa, born as Yōko Shōji, is a celebrated Japanese actress renowned for her extensive career spanning over six decades. Born in the picturesque region of Watari-cho, Sakaiminato, Tottori Prefecture, Tsukasa showcased her thespian talent under the guidance of luminary directors such as Yasujirō Ozu, Mikio Naruse, and Akira Kurosawa. After successfully winning the Blue Ribbon Award, Mainichi Film Award and Kinema Junpo Award for her performance in 'The Kii River' (1966), she sealed her place in the pantheon of Japanese film industry. Besides her compelling screen presence, Tsukasa has a distinct lineage, being the niece of the businessman and politician Shōji Ren. Trained formally at Tottori Prefectural Sakai High School and Kyoritsu Women's Junior College, Tsukasa ventured into the world of cinema post her graduation in 1954. Her impactful debut in 'Kimi shinitamo koto nakare', replacing Ineko Arima due to illness, catapulted her stardom. Her roles in iconic films such as Yasujirō Ozu's 'Late Autumn' (1960) and 'The End of Summer' (1961), Akira Kurosawa's 'Yojimbo' (1961), solidified her place in the film industry. After her marriage to politician and attorney Hideyuki Aizawa in 1969, she scaled back her acting commitments to focus on her family. Her humanitarian efforts are visible through her stint as the head of the 'Nihon Taishō Mura' open-air museum from 1999 to 2015. In 2021, Tsukasa's illustrious career was rightly celebrated with a memorial hall in Nihon Taishō Mura.
